Alex Crossland and Savannah Hodge began the season as the #2 doubles team for Coffee County tennis, but finished the season as the #3 doubles team in Region 4AAA on Monday.  Taking part in their first region doubles tournament, Crossland and Hodge fought hard but were no match for the experienced and talented #1 team from Siegel.  Tied at 2 to 2 in the first set, Siegel’s #1 team of Joy Chanthanalay and Lexie Greene closed the first set strong winning 6 to 3.  After splitting the first 2 games of the second set, the Stars swept the last 5 games of the set to complete the straight sets sweep at 3-6, 1-6.  The loss ends a resurgent season for the Lady Raider tennis program coached by Mike Ray and Audra Brown.  The Lady Raiders only graduate one of their top 5 singles players while the boys team should feature more experience than any Raider team in recent memory.

“Cumberland just felt right.” were the words of Coffee County’s Sara Brown shortly before signing a basketball scholarship with Cumberland University in a ceremony at CHS on Monday.  Brown, who averaged 8 points per game and ranked as one of the leagues top defenders, had fielded interest from other colleges and turned down a volleyball/basketball scholarship from Martin Methodist University.  Cumberland Coach Jeremy Lewis was very complimentary of Brown and liked her combination of shooting, quickness and tenacity.  “We invited Sara to our campus and our players loved her.  We wanted to recruit a good person, a good student and a good basketball player and Sara does all 3 of those things.”  Sara also liked the fact that Cumberland, located in Lebanon, Tennessee, is close enough for her parents and grandparents to watch her play.  “My grandparents are my number 1 fans.” added Sara.  Brown also loved the small, beautiful campus and her future coaches and teammates.  Lewis, who will begin his 7th year as head coach for the Bulldogs, led his team to a berth in the 2015 NAIA Division 1 Women’s Basketball National Championship Tournament in March.   Cumberland is a member of the Mid-South Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Bradley Newton Weir

Former Coffee County head baseball coach Bradley Weir is in trouble again and this time it’s for a totally different reason.
Police in Franklin County were searching for Weir, who allegedly threatened to kill people at the Blue Gill Grill restaurant just outside Coffee County. He threaten people at the restaurant with an assault rifle. He was arrested in Chattanooga on Sunday and charged with domestic violence.
Sgt. Chris Guess with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office says that according to a report, Weir got into a fight with his ex-girlfriend’s husband at the Blue Gill Grill. The domestic dispute escalated very quickly.
The report states that Weir said he had assault rifles in his car. He threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend, her husband and everyone else in the restaurant.
He left the scene and Franklin County authorities issued an alert to be on the lookout for the 44 year-old Weir.
Weir worked for the Coffee County Raider Academy as a teacher and was head baseball coach at the high school. This was his first year with the school system after being hired as baseball coach in late May of 2014. He was arrested by Manchester Police on February 3, 2015 for statutory rape by an authority figure.
According to a police report, an episode allegedly occurred on January 29, 2015 and apparently involved a 15-year-old female at Weir’s residence on Hills Chapel Rd in Manchester.
Now that Weir has been found, Investigators will be looking into whether he violated any of his bond conditions during the domestic dispute.

The victim, an 18-year-old man, sustained multiple stab wounds and was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment. During the course of the investigation, Agents, working with investigators from the Metro Moore County Sheriff’s Department, developed information leading to the victim’s friend, Daniel Myers, as the individual responsible for the crime.

County Schools Need More Funding

It’s that time of year, budget time for government entities and the Coffee County school system says it needs more money for the 2015-16 school term. According to our news partner the Manchester Times, Dr. LaDonna McFall Director of Schools is asking the county for an extra $1.4 million.
“The school system cannot keep functioning with no additional money,” McFall told the Budget and Finance committee at a recent meeting.
The proposal calls for a 2 percent raise across the board, totaling $434,346. Also in the budget are four new teaching positions, totaling $224,892, and a series of additional costs that relate to the new middle school and some new buses, totaling an estimated $400,000. The buses will replace ones currently going out of service.
Committee chairman Rush Bricken commended the efforts on the budget, but warned that any department budget additions would have to come from a property tax increase.
Commissioner Mark Kelly warned that breaking the $3 tax rate would be a retail game changer.
County Mayor Gary Cordell said that the school budget will likely be discussed further at upcoming Budget and Finance meetings.
