The Coffee County Central High School basketball teams opened their season at home on Friday night.  Hosting the first of 2 days of Hall of Champions Classic games, the Lady Raiders got a pair of wins while the Red Raiders captured a win in their only contest.  All 3 wins by the home teams involved Coffee County invoking the Mercy Rule on their way to victories.

The Lady Raiders opened the night with a 103 to 14 win over Valor Collegiate Academy.  The Lady Raiders jumped out to a 27 point lead after 1 quarter and held a 53 to 5 lead at the half.  Twelve different Lady Raiders scored in the contest as Coffee County finished with 13 made 3 point baskets.  Bella Vinson led Coffee County in scoring as she had 29 points.  Chloe Gannon added 20 points and Jalie Ruehling chipped in 13 points.

In the second game, the Lady Raiders fell behind early before rolling over the Siegel Stars 68 to 27.  Coffee County fell behind 12 to 6 before Vinson hit a 3 pointer to eclipse the 1,000 point mark for her career.  That made 3 pointer keyed a Lady Raider run that saw them close out the half on a 31 to 6 run.  That cushion was pushed to a 35 point lead heading into the 4th quarter as Coffee County against emptied the bench in the 4th quarter.  Tem different Lady Raiders scored in the game led by Vinson who had 15.  Gannon chipped in another 12 while Jenna Garretson and Alivia Reel each added 8 points.

Preds Snap Losing Streak, Beat Blues in St. Louis

Four different Predators players found the back of the net and Juuse Saros made 24 saves as Nashville defeated the St. Louis Blues, 4-2, on Saturday night at Enterprise Center. The victory snaps a six-game winless streak for the Preds, a much-needed triumph to start a home-and-home set with the Blues.

A hot start led to three goals in the first period for Nashville, and they ultimately handed the top team in the Western Conference only their fifth regulation loss of the season.

More importantly, for the first time in almost three weeks, the Preds got to pack the two points.

“Winning is a lot more fun than losing, and I thought we worked really hard tonight,” Preds Captain Roman Josi said. “We can enjoy this for a couple minutes, but obviously we’re playing them again Monday, so it’s going to be even harder [to face them again]. But it’s definitely a lot more fun [to win].”

“The guys played hard and invested a lot,” Preds Head Coach Peter Laviolette said. “It was good that we were consistent with our game, that guys have been working hard, and the results came tonight. That’s a really good thing.”

It didn’t take Filip Forsberg long – just 20 seconds in, to be exact – to give the Predators the game’s first lead when he pounced on a juicy rebound and fired home his 10th of the season. Just minutes later, Mattias Ekholm threw the puck toward the net and got a friendly bounce as the feed deflected off a Blues defender and past Jordan Binnington for a 2-0 advantage.

After the Blues cut the lead in half with Klim Kostin’s first NHL goal, Nashville’s checking line went to work. Rookie winger Mathieu Olivier drove to the net, and Colton Sissons helped to clean up a loose biscuit in front to give Nashville a 3-1 advantage after 20 minutes.

The play gave Olivier his first-career point in his third NHL game with the Preds. He, Sissons and Austin Watson continued to make up an effective trio for Nashville on Saturday as they combined for eight of the team’s 43 shots on goal.

“We’re getting chances offensively because we’re playing [a physical] style of game, and that’s how we’re going to find success as a line,” Olivier said. “I want to be good in that role, and that’s really important for me and also for my linemates. We’re happy it’s working right now.”

“He was really good,” Laviolette said of Olivier. “He had a couple chances to score, he’s physical, he’s getting his nose dirty, so he’s coming in and providing the element that we’re looking for.”

The second stanza was scoreless, and although the Blues made it interesting with a late power-play goal, Calle Jarnkrok iced it with an empty-netter to give the Predators their first victory since Nov. 4 at Detroit.

“[Saros], first of all, was great. He made some huge saves, and we played really hard defensively,” Josi said. “You start the first shift, you got a goal right away. We got a couple more in the first… It just gives you that momentum for the game.”

Yes, it’s just one win after six results on the wrong side of the ledger, but make no mistake, this one gives the Preds a welcome boost. Now, they’ll get a chance to prove they can follow it up as they face the Blues once more on Monday night (at 7 p.m. CT at Bridgestone Arena).

“We were just trying to get that one, and we got it,” Watson said. “When you’re in it rough like we were, the first [win is] hard to get. It feels like it just eludes you no matter what you do. So, credit to everybody in here, right down to the staff, to the players, everybody stayed with each other, and we were able to find a way to to get a big win tonight. But it’s not even close to over with. We have to bring it. We have to be ready to bring that same effort every time we step on the ice, especially coming up again Monday.”

Notes:

Preds defenseman Ryan Ellis skated in his 500th career game, and Viktor Arvidsson appeared in his 300th contest as the Preds beat the Blues on Saturday night.

Arvidsson left the game in the first period and did not return due to a lower-body injury. Laviolette said following the game he did not have an update on Arvidsson’s status for Monday’s contest.

Forward Kyle Turris and defenseman Yannick Weber were scratched for the Predators.

Nashville will now return to Bridgestone Arena to complete the home-and-home set with the Blues on Monday before hosting the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday.

Titans Explode on Offense in Second Half to Rout Jaguars, 42-20

Story by Jim Wyatt, TitansOnline.com

Ryan Tannehill[Photo by Associated Press]

The Titans turned a tight game vs the Jaguars into a blowout on Sunday with an offensive explosion to start the second half.

And I do mean an offensive explosion.

The Titans scored three touchdowns in less than five minutes to start the second half and rolled to a 42-20 win over the Jaguars at Nissan Stadium.

The touchdowns came at a fast and furious pace, in every way imaginable.

They came on a day when Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill completed 14-of-18 passes for 259 yards and two touchdowns while also running for 43 yards and two touchdowns.

They came on a day when Titans running back Derrick Henry once again electrified the crowd, running for 159 yards and two touchdowns.

They came on a day when receiver A.J. Brown caught four passes for 159 yards, including a 65-yard catch.

And they came on a day when the Titans improved to 6-5 while moving to within one game of the Houston Texans (7-4) for first place in the AFC South.

In the third quarter, Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith went digging into his pile of tricks as the Titans racked up 248 yards and four touchdowns.

On the first possession of the third quarter, after a halfback pass from Henry to tight end Jonnu Smith drew a defensive pass interference penalty, the Titans had the ball at the one-yard line. That’s when Tannehill completed a one-yard touchdown pass to tackle-eligible Dennis Kelly, who spun the ball before celebrating with his teammates as the Titans took a 14-3 lead with 13:13 left in the third.

Less than three minutes later, Henry took off and scored a 74-yard touchdown run that included another batch of stiff-armed, reminiscent of his 99-yard touchdown run against the Jaguars in December of 2018. Henry ended up in the end zone, and that made it 21-3 with 10:40 left in the third.

After linebacker Daren Bates forced a fumble – and recovered it – on the ensuing kickoff, Henry scored again, this time on a seven-yard run, which made it 28-3 with 10:24 remaining.

The three touchdowns came in a span of 4:36.

But the Titans weren’t finished. A few minutes later, Tannehill connected with Brown for the 65-yard touchdown, which made it 35-3 with 6:57 left in the third quarter.

The Jaguars scored on a pair of one-yard touchdown runs by Leonard Fournette to cut the lead to 35-17 before Tannehill scored again on another touchdown run, which made it 42-17 with 9:47 left. The Jaguars kicked a field goal with 4:48 left to make it 42-20.

The second half scene at Nissan Stadium was a wild one, as chants chanted “Henry, Henry, Henry” on multiple occasions while celebrating one score after the next.

The first half lacked scoring, but it didn’t lack some excitement.

The Titans took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on another highlight-reel play from Tannehill.

One a second-and-nine from the Jacksonville 21-yard line, Tannehill took off to his right before cutting to his left and in the direction of the endzone. Tannehill collided with Jacksonville defender Tre Herndon at the goal-line, and after gong airborne, he landed on his back in the endzone for a touchdown.

The Jaguars cut the lead to 7-3 at halftime on a 49-yard field goal by kicker Josh Lambo, but that only set the stage for a crazy final 30 minutes.

The Titans travel to Indianapolis next Sunday to face the Colts.
