Zephyrs Spoil Sounds’ First Doubleheader of Season
The New Orleans Zephyrs beat the Nashville Sounds twice on Monday night at Zephyr Field, taking game one 4-3, and game two 3-1.
The first matchup featured the completion of the contest the two teams began on April 27, a game that Arnold Leon initially started. The Zephyrs could not use their original starter, Adam Conley, because he was promoted to Miami yesterday. Leon threw 3.2 innings of scoreless baseball before rain ended his outing the first time.
After the game resumed, Leon retired the first 9 batters he faced before Juan Diaz singled with two outs in the seventh. Leon would walk the next two batters and manager Steve Scarsone went to his bullpen attempting to preserve the 2-0 lead the Sounds had earned via RBI from Joey Wendle and Kent Matthes earlier in the game.
Freshly optioned from Oakland, Dan Otero made his Sounds debut and it was not one the former Duke Blue Devil was likely to want to remember. New Orleans strung together three two-out hits and the Zephyrs took a 4-2 advantage.
The Sounds threatened in the ninth. Craig Gentry led off the frame with his first XBH of the season, lining a double into the right center gap. Next batter, Luke Carlin walked and suddenly the Sounds had the winning run at the plate with no outs in the ninth. After Alden Carrithers and Wendle made outs, Matthes came to the plate already 2-for-4 with an RBI in the contest. The outfielder singled to right and Gentry scored, but Carlin attempted to go to third on the play and was thrown out by Austin Wates to end the first game.
The second game started thirty minutes after the completion of game one. Fresh off a career-high 11 strike outs, Chris Bassitt threw all six innings for the Sounds. The right-hander fanned four, walked four and yielded five hits. The Zephyrs tagged Bassitt for a run in the first and for two more in the third. He threw a season-high 96 pitches.
The game’s most important play came in the second inning. Sounds right fielder Matt Carson drove rehabbing Miami Marlins’ starter Mat Latos’ offering deep to right. Zephyrs right fielder Cole Gillespie timed his leap and kept the ball in the park. The potential home run would’ve given the Sounds a 3-1 advantage.
The Sounds did get on the scoreboard in the fourth inning. Jason Pridie singled and stole second to get into scoring position. He then scored on a Bryan Anderson RBI single.
Once again Gentry did his best to start a rally in the team’s final at bat, this time getting to third with two outs in the seventh – the final inning of a PCL doubleheader – but the tying run, Pridie, grounded out to end the game.
The two teams will finish their series with an 11:00 a.m. start Tuesday, before a scheduled league-wide off day on Wednesday. Sean Nolin is expected to be activated from the disabled list after missing his last start with a strained left groin. Pat Misch will get the ball for New Orleans.
Tax Increase Possible For Coffee County 2015-16 Budget
In other county news, Dr LaDonna McFall director of county schools recently requested an additional $1.4 million over last year’s budget to pay for four new teachers, four new school buses, salary increases across the board and more.
A $1.4 million budget increase for non-school departments would require a 14-cent tax hike. When it comes to schools, annual budget increases for the county school system require twice as much due to the state-mandated revenue sharing requirement with the school systems in Tullahoma and Manchester, even if the other schools are not requesting additional funds. This makes the actual budget request climb to $2.8 million.
County departments other than schools and the ambulance service are asking for around $625,000 in extra funding for their budgets for 2015-16. If all request are granted this could mean a property tax increase of approximately 36-cents.
One measure the Budget and Finance Committee hopes the full commission will do is to establish a capital projects fund for vehicles and other equipment costing $5,000 or more using surplus revenues of $325,000 available in the General Debt Service Fund. The new funding mechanism would improve cash flows, smooth out annual operating budgets for several departments and prevent a tax rate increase of 3.25 cents.
The county commission will meet Tuesday at 6 p.m. to further discuss the budget.

TBI Domestic Violence Report
On Monday, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation released its latest study into the scope and nature of domestic violence offenses, as reported by Tennessee’s law enforcement agencies.
The study utilizes data sent to TBI through the Tennessee Incident Based Reporting System (TIBRS) and includes reported offenses which occurred from 2012 to 2014. Among the report’s findings:
• Simple Assault was, by far, the most frequently reported offense, accounting for 68.4% of all domestic violence offenses.
• Females were three times more likely to be victimized than males.
• From 2012 to 2014, victims were six times more likely to be abused by a spouse than an ex-spouse in domestic-related offenses.
• Domestic violence resulted in 270 murder victims during the three-year study period.
• Juveniles accounted for 58.9% of victims reporting a victim-to-offender relationship as child or step-child.
“The issue of domestic violence is, by no means, a novel problem in American society,” said TBI Director Mark Gwyn. “The persistence of domestic violence and the large number of related incidents reported to law enforcement necessitates continued awareness about this issue.”
