Tennessee Consumer Debt: Two Steps Forward, One Step Back, Says Report

Tennesseans joined the rest of the country in paying off almost $35 billion in credit card debt in the first quarter of this year, according to a study released this week by the credit card comparison site CardHub. While the accomplishment may sound promising, Jill Gonzalez, the group’s spokeswoman, says it’s important to note that consumers accrued almost $46 billion in debt in the last quarter of 2014. “We’re getting farther from the recession, a lot of people say we’re not all the way out of it yet, but I think consumers are now willing and wanting to spend more,” she says. “Unfortunately they’re still spending money that they don’t necessarily have.” To reduce your credit card debt, Gonzalez recommends paying off cards with the highest interest rates first, or transferring debt on those cards to low interest cards. She says it’s also important not to fall behind on credit card payments because delinquency impacts your credit score significantly. Thirty-one percent of the population in Nashville has to use credit and the average credit score is 658 out of 800. Another method to manage spending is called the island approach, which involves using different credit cards for different categories of transactions. For example, you could transfer existing debt to a zero percent interest card, and use another card for ongoing spending that offers rewards points. Gonzalez emphasizes having a budget is key. “Making a budget, sticking to it,” she stresses. “That’s kind of the age old advice, but really just spending less than you have to begin with and then the money that you are spending, make sure you’re setting it aside to pay off your debt.” In addition to paying off debt, experts recommend building an emergency fund in case of job loss or an unexpected illness.

Nashville Swept By Oklahoma City
A big third inning led the Oklahoma City Dodgers to a sweep of the Nashville Sounds as they cruised to a 4-2 victory at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark on Sunday night.
The Sounds got on the board first, hanging two runs in the top of the third courtesy of RBI singles via Anthony Aliotti and Jason Pridie after Alden Carrithers led the inning off with a double down the right field line.
Momentum shifted quickly however. Hector Olivera led off the bottom half of the inning with a single and Buck Britton flied out. Two singles and a double followed and the Sounds suddenly trailed. To make matters worse Sounds starter Brad Mills left the game with an apparent leg injury on the play. Angel Castro was rushed into action, but he was unable to keep the inherited runner, Austin Barnes, from scoring.
.
Castro helped manager Steve Scarsone and the Sounds out however; throwing 2.2 scoreless innings before Jim Fuller spelled him. The Massachusetts-native also threw two scoreless innings before Brock Huntzinger put up a zero in the eighth inning to extend his scoreless streak to 14.2 innings.
Unfortunately, the Sounds offense could not get it going all night against former Athletics farmhand Deck McGuire and the team with the PCL’s best record completed their first sweep of the season.
The Sounds return home Monday night as they play host to Memphis for the first game of the Tennessee Lottery I-40 Cup. Chris Bassitt is expected to face Nick Greenwood. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.

Braves Unable to Protect Lead in Rubber Game
Down five runs at one point, the Mets clubbed four homers Sunday en route to their biggest comeback of the season in a 10-8 win over the Braves at Citi Field. Juan Lagares completed the comeback with a go-ahead three-run home run in the sixth, giving the Mets a two-run lead — their first of the game. A patchwork bullpen took it from there, leaning on Jeurys Familia’s four-out save to hold Atlanta scoreless over the final five innings.
Most of the early afternoon belonged to the Braves, who assaulted Mets spot starter Dillon Gee with an eight-run barrage over 3 2/3 innings. But Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz gave most of that back, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits and departing with one out in the fifth. The Mets’ 25th-ranked offense then completed the rally against Luis Avilan and Atlanta’s 27th-ranked bullpen.
The Braves have now lost each of the past three games in which they have scored at least eight runs. They went 135-2 when scoring at least eight runs from 2009-14.
Atlanta will begin a two-game series against the Red Sox on Monday at 6:10 p.m. CT. You can hear that broadcast here on Thunder Radio beginning at 6:00 PM. Williams Perez will make his scheduled start, despite having completed a scoreless inning of relief to complete Saturday’s 11-inning win over the Mets. Perez threw just nine pitches in the “emergency” relief appearance.

High Speed Pursuit Starts In Coffee County Ends In Monteagle
Late last week Tennessee State Trooper Tommy Lyles stopped a black Cadillac Escalade on I-24 eastbound around the 124 mile marker in Coffee County. The vehicle was speeding doing 90mph in 60 mph construction zone. The subject initially stopped, but it was later discovered that the driver was wanted out of Wisconsin for a probation violation, on a charge of armed robbery. The trooper then noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and requested a K9 unit from the Coffee County Sheriff’s department to assist with the stop. The trooper then advised dispatch that he was in pursuit of the Cadillac Escalade. It was at this time there were 2 Coffee County Sheriff’s units assisting the trooper. The trooper then advised that the subject crashed at the 134.5 mile marker and continued on eastbound. As the pursuit reached the 134 mile marker the Monteagle Police officers who were assisting the trooper as well, attempted to box the vehicle in and were almost struck by the fleeing suspect. The driver then lost control of the vehicle and started to spin, the vehicle was struck on the driver’s side door by a Monteagle PD unit. The driver of the vehicle, then attempted to back over and ram the Monteagle PD unit. Trooper Lyles then struck the vehicle in the driver’s side door and the Coffee County unit struck the vehicle in the rear, pinning the fleeing vehicle in the ditch. The pursuit reached speeds up to 108 mph, and lasted approximately 11 minutes. There were 3 total occupants in the fleeing vehicle, who did not sustain any injuries and were all taken into custody. The warrant out of Wisconsin was confirmed and a hold was put on the driver Bernard Drew Levell Jr. He’ll be extradited back to Wisconsin. He was booked at the Coffee County Jail under a $525,000 bond.
