Braves Outlast Marlins in Back-and-Forth Affair
Eury Perez’s two-out single in the eighth inning proved to be the decisive blow as the Braves overcame Matt Wisler’s shaky start and Andrew McKirahan’s ugly relief appearance to claim a 9-8 win over the Marlins on Thursday night at Turner Field.
After the Marlins erased a three-run deficit against McKirahan in the top of the eighth, Daniel Castro singled off Bryan Morris to begin the bottom of the inning, moved to second on Morris’ throwing error and scored when Perez hit his game-winning single to shallow left-center field. Miami has dropped four straight, allowing 44 runs during the slide.
Adonis Garcia highlighted Atlanta’s three-run fifth inning with his four homer in what was just his 49th career at-bat. Arodys Vizcaino worked a scoreless ninth inning to record his first career save. The Braves have won eight of the first 10 games they have played against the Marlins this season.
Braves right fielder Nick Markakis extended his hitting streak to 13 games and drove in three of the five runs Marlins starter Jose Urena allowed through the first two innings. Markakis’ two-run double highlighted a three-run second inning that also included a Jace Peterson RBI single.
When the rain picked up in the eighth, the Marlins swam their way back into the game. For the second time on the night, Miami overcame a three-run deficit to pull even. The three runs knotted the score at 8 off McKirahan, who was with the Marlins in Spring Training. Dee Gordon had a two-run single, and Christian Yelich’s fielder’s-choice RBI grounder tied it.
Wisler extended his recent struggles, allowing five earned runs and nine hits over 5 1/3 innings. Wisler surrendered two hits before recording his first out in a two-run first inning, and he allowed four hits, including Derek Dietrich’s solo homer, during a two-run fourth inning. The rookie right-hander has seen his ERA rise from 3.10 to 4.85 as he has allowed at least four earned runs in three of his past four starts.
Julio Teheran gets the nod on Friday night at 6:35 p.m. CT in the second of four games against the Marlins. Teheran defeated the Marlins in Miami on Opening Day and then did not win another road start until last Sunday in Philadelphia. Though Teheran has been maddeningly inconsistent this year, he has posted a 2.37 ERA in 10 home starts. Thunder Radio will have the broadcast of the contest beginning at 6:20 PM.
Tullahoma Woman Struck by a Truck
A Tullahoma woman was flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center Tuesday night after being struck by a pickup truck.
Cassie Ferguson of Songbird Lane was injured when she was struck by a Toyota 4-Runner while at Pleasant Grove Boat Dock.
According to a report by Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy Kalyn Machuta, Ferguson, her husband David Ferguson and her 11-year-old son were at the boat dock when the couple began to argue. David then got into his vehicle and started to leave. According to the deputy’s report, Cassie gave chase after him and the pickup struck her. She fell and hit her head on the ground.
According to her son, she then drove home to Songbird Lane. When she arrived home, she opened the door to her pickup truck and fell to the ground and began throwing up and crying. The boy then called 911.
When she arrived David was at the house but he left, according to the deputy’s report, “because he was afraid he was going to jail.”
The North Franklin County Fire Department was the first responder to the residence and began to treat the woman until ambulance personnel arrived. Cassie was transported to the North Franklin County Fire Department and placed in a LifeFlight helicopter and flown to the Nashville medical facility.
While Deputy Machuta was on the scene, David called Cassie’s cellphone and the deputy answered it and talked to him. She asked him where he was. He told her that he was going to get his son in Shelbyville. At that point Franklin County authorities notified law enforcement officers in Bedford County. David Ferguson was found and arrested at a shopping center in Shelbyville.
David Ferguson was booked into the Franklin County Jail on charges of aggravated assault and domestic violence. He is being held on a bond of $200,000 and is to appear in Franklin County General Sessions Court Aug. 20.

Perez, Braves Offense Struggle vs. Giants in Finale
Kelby Tomlinson drove in three runs and Matt Duffy delivered a two-run single in the seventh inning to give Madison Bumgarner some cushion as he guided the Giants to a 6-1 win over the Braves on Wednesday night at Turner Field.
As Bumgarner was surrendering just one run over 7 1/3 innings, Braves starting pitcher Williams Perez was allowing 10 hits over six-plus innings. Three of the six runs (five earned) charged to the Atlanta right-hander came courtesy of two-out singles recorded by Tomlinson, who was making his first career start in place of injured second baseman Joe Panik. The Giants, who have won 16 of their past 21 games, chased Perez during a three-run seventh that was highlighted by Duffy’s two-run double. Atlanta did not dent the scoreboard until the bottom half of the seventh, when Jace Peterson singled and scored from first base on Ryan Lavarnway’s opposite-field double.
Since joining Atlanta’s rotation in May, Perez has shown a knack for using his sinker to escape trouble. But the rookie was unable to do so after a Eury Perez error in center field put runners at second and third with two outs in the second inning. Instead of walking Tomlinson to get to Bumgarner, Perez challenged the rookie and paid the price. The three runs tallied by the Giants in the seventh inning might have been a product of fatigue as Perez was making just his second start since missing a month with a bruised left foot.
Before surrendering Lavarnway’s RBI double, Bumgarner had not allowed an earned run over his previous 21 innings at Turner Field. Nick Markakis extended his hit streak to 12 games with a first-inning single and later capped his 35th multi-hit game with a one-out double in the sixth. Markakis advanced to third base on a Jonny Gomes single, but was left stranded when Chris Johnson struck out to end the sixth inning.
Matt Wisler will take the mound as Atlanta begins a four-game series against the Marlins on Thursday at 6:05 p.m. CT. The Braves have won seven of nine against the Marlins this year. Wisler has a 2.33 ERA over his only three previous starts at Turner Field. Thunder Radio will bring you the broadcast beginning at 6:00 PM.
