CCMS Volleyball Claims Preseason Tournament Title

The CCMS volleyball team following their CHS Middle School Play Day tournament win.

A spectacular performance in the service and passing phases of the game powered the Coffee County Middle School varsity volleyball team to a 5 and 0 record and the championship of the inaugural Coffee County CHS Middle School Play Day held at the Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gym.  The Lady Raiders swept through pool play with 3 wins which slotted them into the semifinals of the single elimination tournament.  In the semifinals, Coffee County dismantled Rock Springs 25-16 and 25-2.  In the second set, Elizabeth Proffitt served 17 times in a row without a service error as Rock Springs was unable to effectively set their offense off her well placed serves.  “Elizabeth played great at the net and behind the line which is hard to do” said head coach Lora Selvog.

In the championship, the Lady Raiders rallied from a 16 to 1o deficit to take their first lead at 21-20.  From that point, each team traded points to 24 before Coffee County was able to scratch out the last 2 points to get a 26 to 24 win.  In the 2nd set, Warren County, a team which Coffee County Middle has never defeated, built an early 6 point lead before cruising to an easy 25 to 13 win to force a decisive 3rd set to 15.  In the final set, the Lady raiders built an early 9 to 2 lead only to see Warren County close the gap to 12 to 10.  A crucial Warren County service error opened the door for the Lady Raiders to recapture the momentum and earn the 15 to 11 win and the tournament title.

Warren County earned their finals appearance with a hard fought 25 to 22 and 25 to 20 win over the Coffee County JV team.  The Lady Raider JV team, which went 1 and 2 in pool play, was the talk of the day as they appeared on the verge of facing their varsity sisters in the tournament finals before settling for 3rd place.  Prior to the tournament finals, the Lady Raider JV team was the only team to win a game against Warren County on the day.   The 3 set loss to Warren County in pool play and the close 2 set loss in the semifinals had Coffee County head coach happy and a little scared: “I was beginning to think I was gonna have to play my JV in the finals” said Selvog.  She went to praise them saying “They came out today and dominated.”  The JV team got wins over the varsity squads from Whitworth Buchanan and Harris in the first 2 rounds of the tournament claiming a 2 set win over Buchanan and a 3 set win over Harris.

Coffee County opens the regular season at home on Tuesday night against Fayetteville.  The Lady Raiders will square off with the Lady Tigers beginning at 6:00 PM.  Coffee County will have a rematch with Warren County on Tuesday, August 18th at CCMS and Thunder Radio will be there to broadcast that important conference match.

Coffee Middle Soccer Finishes Preseason with Scrimmage Play Day

Pink Soccer ballA Warren County goal in the 29th minute spoiled a perfect play day record for the Coffee County Middle School varsity soccer team on Saturday at CCMS. The Lady Raiders got a goal on their Pioneer rivals in the 19th minute from 6th grader Anna Amado to give the Lady Raiders a lead two-thirds of the way through the contest. Warren County got a one on one breakaway on a beautiful through ball to knot the score with a minute remaining to achieve the 1 to 1 draw. The varsity got a 3 to 0 win earlier in the day over DeKalb County to finish their “Kickin Cancer” play day with a record of 1-0-1. Marley Perry, Julia Duncan and Jade Arnold found the back of the net for the Lady Raiders.
The JV Lady Raiders were 1 & 1 on the day as they dropped a 3 to 1 decision to Siegel even though they dominated possession for most of the game. Kyleigh Harner scored the lone goal for Coffee County. In the second JV game, the Lady Raiders rebounded to shut out Harris 2 to 0 as Harner and Amado scored for Coffee County.
A big crowd was on hand for the play day which featured Coffee County in pink jerseys and the use of pink balls. Coach Travis O’Kelley said that a portion of the proceeds from the play day are donated to the Middle Tennessee Breast Cancer Coalition. “Breast cancer is something that has touched many of our families” said O’Kelley.
Though the Lady Raiders passed the ball well, Coach O’Kelley stressed the need to improve their spacing and marking this week in practice. Coffee County opens the season on Thursday as they travel to Shelbyville to take on Harris in a big conference match. The game is a rematch of last season’s CTC Conference Tournament final that Harris won 1 to 0 which was the lone loss of the season for Coffee County. Kickoff between these bitter rivals is set for 6:00 PM.

Coffee County Middle School Football Has Strong Scrimmage Performance on Saturday

CCMS Football helmetA week of practice to correct some problems from last Friday’s scrimmage at Rock Springs was the winning recipe for the Coffee County Middle School football team on Saturday. The Red Raiders defeated Grundy Co Middle and Flintville in 3 sessions of varsity scrimmage action in preparation for Tuesday’s season opener.
Coach Brock Freeze was pleased with his offense’s performance and the performance of his defensive front 7. Grundy Co had some success in the passing game, but a Blanton Brown touchdown pass and 2 point conversion were the difference as the Raiders claimed an 8 to 6 win in the first session. In session 2, the Raiders dominated both lines of scrimmage in a 20 to 0 shut out of Flintville. Freeze shared praise for how the Raiders line blocked and how the offense executed in the win.
The varsity team closed the day with a 20 to 8 win over Grundy County as the 2 teams worked exclusively in goal line situations. “We did a good job of stopping the run all day, and it showed in (the) goal line(set)” said Freeze. “Our backs ran hard and I am pleased with our effort” added Freeze. The Raiders open the season at home on Tuesday night at 6:30 PM as Whitwell comes to Carden-Jarrell Field. Tuesday night also marks the season premiere of Home Town Tuesday as Thunder Radio will broadcast the game live beginning with the 6:15 pregame show.

A Manchester man has been arrested for a second time for taking utility trailers from Tullahoma residents. Anthony Dalton was arrested Aug. 6 for the theft of a trailer that was taken July 15.
According to a warrant obtained by Coffee Sheriff’s Investigator James Sherrill, Dalton had been selling tools that were inside the trailer to area pawn shops as well as two individuals.
Sherrill alleges that he has also located other items from inside the trailer at Dalton’s residence. However, some tools have not been located. The total value of the tools was set at $7,500.
Dalton was booked into the Coffee County Jail under a $75,000 bond.
He was arrested earlier last week by Sherrill for the theft of another trailer that had been taken from another individual in Tullahoma.

Maj. Gen. Max Haston, Tennessee’s Adjutant General

Maj. Gen. Max Haston, Tennessee’s Adjutant General, announced that the Military Department has taken steps to increase the security of its personnel and facilities to include allowing Tennessee Army & Air National Guard members with valid Tennessee State Handgun Carry Permits to carry handguns at State Armories and facilities.
Haston’s decision follows Governor Bill Haslam’s directive, issued earlier this month in the aftermath of the deadly shootings in Chattanooga, to review current Guard personnel who are authorized to be armed in the performance of their duties, and identify and arm Guardsmen where necessary to protect themselves, citizens and Guard facilities.
