Rallying to finish strong during a shaky 2nd set gave the Coffee County Middle School Lady Raider volleyball team the momentum needed in the deciding 3rd set to get a 2 to 1 win over Warren County on Tuesday night at CCMS.  In a match broadcast on Thunder Radio, the Lady Raiders gutted out a 26 to 24 win in the first set against the Lady Pioneers.  As the second set started, a rash of service errors put the Lady Raiders in an 11 to 4 hole as Warren County seized any Raider momentum.  Coffee County settled down to close the gap before falling 25 to 21 in the 2nd set.  Despite the 7 service errors in the 2nd set, Coffee County started the 3rd set strong as they roared out to an 11 to 5 lead on their way to a 15 to 10, 3rd set win to claim the victory.  Amanda Mukai had 6 aces for Coffee County while Sarah West added 4.  West also led the Lady Raiders in kills with 3 while Elizabeth Proffit added 2 kills herself.    The Lady Raiders will return to action on Saturday as the take part in the DCA Tournament in Nashville.  The Lady Raiders will play at 9:20, 10:40 and Noon before entering the single elimination bracket play.  You can download the podcast of Tuesday’s broadcast by visiting the following link: http://www.thunder1320.com/downloads/

CHS Volleyball Opens Season with Sweep of Shelbyville

VolleyballsPicking up right where they left off last year, the Coffee County CHS volleyball team opened their season with another District 8AAA win on Tuesday night.  The Lady Raiders welcomed District 8AAA’s newest team, the Eaglettes of Shelbyville to the Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gym as they sent the visitors home in straight sets 25-9, 25-10 and 25-17.  The names and the faces looked new in red and black, but the strong service game and effective offensive flow was highly reminiscent of the defending district champs.  Coach Andrew Taylor used 13 players on the night as Shelbyville had no answer for the strong net play of the Lady Raiders.  Coffee County scored 20 kills on the match as Diana Davis led the team with 6 kills while Peyton Nicoll added 5.  Maddie Taylor was the assist leader as she served up 10 assists.  Taylor also led the team in service aces with 9, while Davis added 7 for a Coffee County team that scored an amazing 27 aces in the 3 set match.  With the win, the Lady Raiders open the season with a 1 and 0 record overall and in district play.  Coffee County hits the road on Thursday night as they travel to Tullahoma for a 6:00 PM match.

Gas Prices Will Continue To Fall

gas prices2The price of oil is on its longest weekly slump of the year, after reaching the lowest closing price since the ‘Great Recession’. This continues to put downward pressure on the price of gasoline, which dropped another 2 cents last week in the southeastern U.S.
There continues to be a surplus amount of oil in the global market which is expected to keep prices of both oil and gasoline on the low end through the rest of this year,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Gas prices did not fall as fast last week as they have in recent weeks, but that is to be expected because we are still in the middle of the peak driving season. Gas prices should fall even faster in the fall when school is back in session.”
Last week, the price of oil reached its lowest closing price since March 3, 2009. On that day, the price of oil was $41.65, and gasoline averaged $1.81 in Tennessee. As of Tuesday the price of oil was $41.87 per barrel.
The current average price for gas in Tennessee is $2.29 per gallon. In Coffee County the low price is $2.16 in Manchester and in Tullahoma the low price per gallon is $2.19.

Bedford County Sheriff Making Changes To Secure Courthouse

Bedford-County-Sheriff-DepartmentBedford County Sheriff Austin Swing is looking at making changes in security at the county courthouse in Shelbyville.
Last month 24-year old Tristan McMahon escaped out of the courthouse right after being sentenced on drugs and weapons charges. McMahon has so far avoided capture.
A Bedford County committee has made a proposal to hire two more sheriff’s deputies and a correctional officer, all to be stationed at the courthouse for security. The Bedford County Commission still has to approve the recommendation.
Also, the sheriff wants the four doors on the first floor to be secured. One for prisoner transport and the other three would be used only as exits. The sheriff also wants people visiting the courthouse to go through a basement metal detector.
If you see, or know the whereabouts of 24 year-old Tristan McMahon, please call Bedford County Sheriff’s Office immediately at 931.684.3232, or Crimestoppers at 931.685.4300, to remain anonymous.
