50th Annual Semmes-McKenzie Lions Bowl
The 50th Annual Semmes-McKenzie Lions Bowl freshmen football game will be played on Thursday October 29th, 2015 at Wilkins Stadium in Tullahoma. This will be a doubleheader featuring four of the top freshmen football teams in the mid-state area. The first game will start at 6:00 pm when the Christ Presbyterian Academy Lions (Nashville) will play the Oakland Patriots (Murfreesboro). The second game will begin at 8:00 pm and feature the Columbia Lions and the Tullahoma Wildcats. Both Tullahoma and Christ Presbyterian Academy are undefeated at 8 wins and no losses, Oakland has 7 wins and 1 loss, and Columbia has 4 wins and 2 losses.
The Lions Bowl originated in 1965 and was sponsored by the Tullahoma Civic and Service Council. Sleepy McKenzie was one of the bowl’s originators and continued leading the bowl team through 2006. Bill Comer has been the bowl chairman from 2006 to the present. During the early years, there were no TSSAA playoffs and the bowls were the only post-season rewards for teams with outstanding records. The Tullahoma Lions Club became the sole sponsor of the game in 1970. After the playoff system was implemented, the bowls continued to operate successfully since only the top teams in a district participate in the playoffs, leaving ample teams with 7 or more wins (the TSSAA requirement at that time) to fill the bowl slots. Eventually, the TSSAA increased participation in the playoffs to the point that only a few teams across the state were available for the bowls. Clester Winningham, Tullahoma freshmen football coach at the time, suggested that the Lions Bowl format be changed to a doubleheader featuring freshmen teams. This was done in 1997 and was highly successful. Today, the bowl is widely recognized across the mid-state area as an effective and meaningful reward for high school freshmen football teams.
In June of 2011, The Tullahoma Lions Bowl was renamed the Semmes-McKenzie Lions Bowl. This was done in memory of Dr. Frank Semmes who almost single-handily produced the Lions Bowl printed program from the time the Lions Club assumed sponsorship until his death in early 2011, and James “Sleepy” McKenzie who was one of the original founders of the bowl and chaired the bowl from its inception until 2006.
Proceeds from the game received by the Tullahoma Lions Club will be used to support the club’s Sight Conservation Program which purchases eyeglasses and provides surgery for needy citizens of the local area. The participating schools keep funds from their sale of advanced tickets.
Members of the bowl committee for 2015 are: Bill Comer, Chairman, Bill Cox and Justin Duckworth team selection and facilities coordination; Sally Hoehl program; Don Jones and Russ Gier, concessions; J. Ray Joellenbeck, tickets; Bob Johnson, press box; Jim Brewer, awards; Richard Kulp, DVD sales; and Jasper Smith and John Brandon, gates. Justin Duckworth is the current president of the Tullahoma Lions Club.
The primary sponsor of this year’s bowl will be Lakeway Publishers, Inc. The Tullahoma Lions Club is pleased to have Lakeway and The Tullahoma News participate in the bowl sponsorship along with all the other area businesses that have bought ads in the game program.
Tracy City Man Charged with 2012 Crime in Shelbyville
A Tracy City man has been charged with burglarizing a Shelbyville pharmacy in 2012.
Robert Ferrell Nunley, 43, of Tracy City was charged Friday with burglary, theft of property over $10,000 and criminal conspiracy in the Jan. 8, 2012 burglary at McGee’s Prescription Center, Det. Lt. Brian Crews of the Shelbyville Police Department said Monday.
“We caught a large break in September when a pharmacy was burglarized in Sevierville,” Crews said. “A black Range Rover was seen on video.”
“The Range Rover was spotted the next day by a Sevierville officer. He discovered it had a stolen tag and started a pursuit.”
The pursuit ended in a crash and Nunley’s arrest.
Crews said he saw the police mug shot of Nunley and recognized him from video of the McGee’s burglary.
A regional law enforcement website, in which messages detailing incidents including robberies such as these, helped investigators pin down the details, Crews said.
“He is suspected in a number of pharmacy burglaries throughout the Southeast,” Crews said.
A large number of pills were stolen in the 2012 incident.

“Pink Out Day” at Motlow College is Oct 29
The Motlow College Moore County campus Student Government Association (SGA), Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society, Office of Disability and Testing Services, and Office of Student and Campus Relations is sponsoring a campus-wide “Pink Out” on Thursday, Oct. 29 in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Circumstances have created a unique environment and opportunity for this year’s annual event, resulting in the campus slogan being revised to, “Breast Cancer and All Other Cancers Awareness Month”. The change is in honor of Dr. Ward Harder, a long-time Motlow professor currently battling cancer, and his wife Dr. Janice Harder, who is also a Motlow professor. The Harders have taught over 75 combined years at Motlow.
The opening ceremony will be held at 1:45 p.m. in the courtyard between Simon Hall and Forrester Student Center. The walk will be one trip around the ‘loop road’, which is approximately one mile. Following the walk, a reception will be held in the Crouch Center lobby. A ‘Wall of Courage’ banner will be placed in the Forrester Center cafeteria. Attendees are encouraged to sign the banner in honor of survivors and in memory of those who have lost the battle against cancer.
Susan G. Komen is credited for bringing national attention to the devastation of breast cancer. Equally important, Susan is credited for rallying nationwide support in the fight against breast cancer and in the hope of finding a cure.
