The Coffee County Middle School basketball teams opened the regular season in winning fashion on Monday night at home as they swept a pair of games from the rival Trojans of South Franklin. A hot shooting first half saw the Lady Raiders drain five 3 pointers and force a dozen turnovers on their way to a 49 to 30 win. The Lady Raiders raced out to a 10 to 2 lead in the first 2 minutes of the game as South had no answer for Coffee County’s quickness and ball movement. The Lady Raiders were led in scoring by Julia Duncan who had 15 points, Ellie Graham and Bella Vinson each added 14 points for Coffee County.

Kyle Farless hit a 3 pointer in the waning seconds of the first half to give the Red Raiders a lead that they would not relinquish in a 27 to 21 defeat of South in the boys game. Farless’ 3 point basket made the halftime score 17 to 16 in favor of Coffee County. Coffee County used their interior size in the 2nd half as Trevor Horne and Brandon Jernigan combined for 7 of the Raiders last 10 points. Jernigan led Coffee County in scoring with 11 points while Farless finished with 5 points and Horne had 4 points.
Coffee County will be back at home on Thursday night as they welcome North Franklin to the CCMS gym. The girls’ game gets underway at 6 PM.

Infrastructure Needs in Tennessee and Coffee County

Coffee Co. SealTennessee needs at least $42.3 billion of public infrastructure improvements during the five-year period of 2013-2018 according to a new report by the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (TACIR). The need for public infrastructure improvements as reported by state and local officials is up $4.1 billion (10.7%) compared with the year before, mainly because bridges with remedial needs exceeding $50,000 are now treated as immediate needs, consistent with all other project types in the inventory regardless of when funds will be available to repair or upgrade them. Without those bridge projects, the total cost would have increased by only $369 million (1.0%).
The report says Coffee County needs $301 million in public infrastructure improvements. The local cost would be $109,591,734.
The category requiring the most improvement in Coffee County and statewide is transportation and utilities.
Coffee County is looking at $166.7 million worth of transportation infrastructure upgrades, which is around 55 percent of Coffee County’s total improvement costs.
The county alone maintains 637.28 miles of road. This does not include roads maintained by Tullahoma and Manchester cities.
Of the 95 counties in Tennessee, Coffee County ranks 33rd highest in infrastructure improvement needs.

Siegel High School Football Player Condition Unchanged

Baylor Bramble

Baylor Bramble

The family of a Siegel High School Football player who suffered a head injury during a game in October has been updating friends and family on the boy’s progress.
Baylor Bramble, a junior cornerback, had to undergo emergency brain surgery at Vanderbilt.
On Friday night Coffee County took on Siegel in high school football. The game began with a tribute to Bramble. With only 10 players on the field, the Stars kicked off, and Vanderbilt commit Alontae Taylor ran up to the 33-yard line and downed the ball there. Taylor took a knee on the first snap of the game as the public address announcer credited Bramble with the stop. At that point, both teams met in the middle of the field for a prayer for Bramble.
On Halloween, his father David posted an update on Twitter saying Baylor was moving his arms, though not on command.
However, his father posted a tweet on Sunday that said Baylor’s latest MRI showed no improvement.
The family though hasn’t given up hope and has requested your continued prayers.

Tennessee Board of Education Asking for Feedback

tennessee flagThe Tennessee State Board of Education is seeking feedback on newly revised K-12 math and English language arts standards.
The Leaf-Chronicle reports the board launched a new website in late October to give the public its first opportunity to offer input on standards that were recently improved by state educators after previous public input.
In a statement, the state board says the standards will be available for online feedback through mid-November.
The board says the standards were developed by “expert educator advisory teams” during the summer, and set “grade-specific goals that exemplify what students” should know and be able to do by the end of a certain grade or course.
Once the data is collected from the public, it will be aggregated and sent to the Standards Recommendation Committee.
