Grundy County Teacher Charged with Statutory Rape

Tommy Andrews
Deputies arrested Tommy Andrews, 41, on Sunday and charged him with one count of aggravated statutory rape and one count of aggravated statutory rape by an authority figure.
Grundy County Sheriff Clint Shrum says, “We received a complaint last week and we presented the case to the district attorney’s office before charges were filed”.
Shrum says during the process of his department’s investigation his officers learned a complaint was made to the Department of Children’s Services about Andrews on May 7.
New Grundy County Director of Schools Jessie Kinsey said in a released statement. “An employee of the Grundy County Schools has been charged with criminal activity against one of our students. Of course, this person is presumed innocent until he is proven guilty in a court of law.
“We are offering counseling to the student, and we stand ready to cooperate with law enforcement officials as necessary.
Andrews has been released from jail on a $60,000 bond. As part of the conditions of his bond, Andrews must wear a GPS monitoring device to ensure he stays away from the victim in the case.
Empty Wallets: Tennesseans Have Least to Spend During the Holidays

With low holiday spending budgets, a survey by WalletHub indicates Tennesseans stand a chance at breaking the bank this holiday, as they try to buy for everyone on their lists. (mconnors/morguefile.com)
If your finances feel tight this holiday, you’re in good company. Tennesseans – and specifically those living in Knoxville and Memphis – have some of the lowest holiday budgets, when compared with 563 cities nationwide, according to a report released by WalletHub, a website providing information to consumers and small-business owners. Spokeswoman Jill Gonzalez said WalletHub studied average monthly expenses, income and debt to income ratios to arrive at its conclusions. “In Memphis, the average consumer can only afford to spend about $98 on their holiday spending, Knoxville more like $80,” she said, “so both are less than one-eighth of what the average consumer spends.” According to the National Retail Federation, holiday spending this year will average more than $800 for each person. Americans are projected to end the year with more than $60 billion in additional credit card debt. Gonzalez said the small amount of money Tennessee consumers actually have to spend leads many to accrue holiday debt, which is difficult to pay off after the wrapping paper is off and gifts are given. “What this means is for people to really be careful on their holiday spending,” she said. “A lot of times, we see credit-card debt really rack up during the month of December alone, and of course that interest carries on far beyond the holiday season.” To stay in budget, experts recommend asking family and friends if they’re interested in reducing gift expectations this year, making a shopping list, shopping online to avoid impulse purchases and keeping an eye on free shipping and coupon codes.

Lawrence County Dashes Red Raider Upset Bid in High School Basketball on Friday

Kohl Young of CHS Basketball
A 14 point halftime lead was not enough to hold off a 2nd half rally by Lawrence County on Friday night for the Red Raiders as they dropped their 2nd straight heart-breaking decision by a final score of 61 to 55. Five 3 pointers in the 1st half helped the Red Raiders build a 16 point lead in the 2nd quarter as Coffee County played 16 minutes of nearly flawless basketball. Lawrence County answered the challenge in the 3rd quarter as they scored the first 7 points of the 2nd half, eventually taking a lead into the 4th quarter. The Red Raiders enjoyed a short 4 point lead with 6:16 to go in the game before the visiting Wildcats outscored Coffee County 20 to 10 down the stretch to claim the huge district win. Kohl Young had 9 points in the 1st quarter and 7 points in the 4th quarter to lead Coffee County in scoring with 16 points. Wyatt Day added 11 points and Boone Riddle chipped in 6 for the Raiders. For his strong play on the glass, and his team high point total, Young was named the Gateway Tire and Service Center player of the game.

Jacey Vaughn of CHS Basketball
The Lady Raiders also enjoyed a 1st quarter lead, but it was a short one as Coffee County succumbed to a tough and experienced Lady Wildcat team by a final score of 60 to 38. Lawrence County entered the game with a perfect record, and the Lady Cats were nearly perfect as they closed out the first half on a 13 to 4 run to take a 16 point lead into the locker room at the half. The Lady Raiders fought gamely down the stretch, but the outcome was never in doubt in the 2nd half. Coffee County was led in scoring by a pair of freshmen as Jacey Vaughn and Abby Morgan each had 8 points for the Lady Raiders. Alliyah Williams added 7 points and Holli Smithson netted 6 for Coffee County. Vaughn had a team high 6 Al White Ford/Lincoln free throws to lead Coffee County in that category and was named the Gateway Tire and Service Center player of the game.
The Coffee County boys are back in action on Monday night as they host Smyrna at 6 PM at the Joe Frank Patch Gym in a boys’ only contest. Both Raider teams will be back on the floor on Tuesday night as Fayetteville visits for a doubleheader. Thunder Radio will bring you exclusive coverage both nights as we will begin our broadcast with the Powers Storage Pregame Show at 5:50
