CORRECTION– to Traffic Alert at 9th Grade Academy
Work has begun in Coffee County on a new exit ramp on the eastbound side of Exit 111. Grading, drainage, retaining/barrier walls and paving are taking place. As of yesterday (Jan 19) work on Hwy 55 West will close the right lane from around the fuel tanks at the Coffee Farmers Co-op to the entrance to the Coffee County 9th Grade Academy. The entrance to the school will NOT be closed as previously reported.
Once work begins on the interstate the outside shoulder on I-24 East will be closed on Monday through Friday between the hours of 6AM and 6PM. The estimated project completion date is July 2016.
At the completion of the work all eastbound traffic wanting to go to Tullahoma will take the new ramp. This work is being done so traffic will not have to cross over Hwy 55 in order to turn toward Tullahoma.
Winchester Man Facing Charges out of Tullahoma
On Monday Tullahoma Officer Derrick Derlien responded to North Jackson St in reference to a reckless driver. Upon making contact with the vehicle a traffic stop was made. According to the arrest warrant the driver jumped out and began to run from officers. After a brief chase Troutt was brought into custody.
The warrant goes onto to say that officers began searching the vehicle and saw in plain view on the floorboard a small bag of green leafy substance. The weight of the substance was approximately 6 grams. Also in the same bag was what was believed to be 4 grams of METH, digital scales and rolling papers. A check of Troutt’s driving privilege reveled it to be revoked/suspended 2nd offense.
His bond was set at $9,500 and he has a court date of Feb 11, 2016.
Gas Prices Continue Fall
As oil slips to the lowest level in more than a decade, gas prices continue logging multi-year lows. The price of a gallon of regular unleaded is $1.89, the lowest national average since February 27, 2009. Gas prices in the southeastern U.S. are also at 7-year lows, with Monday’s state average hitting a $1.68 in Tennessee.
The price of crude oil fell below $30 for the first time in 12 years. This comes amid concerns that problems in the Chinese economy will reduce fuel demand. There is also downward pressure on prices due to signs that sanctions against Iran would be lifted, allowing a boost in crude shipments form OPEC’s fifth-biggest member.
The low price for gas in Manchester this week is $1.54 and $1.56 per gallon in Tullahoma.
TDOT Offering New Sign Contest
The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is holding a sign contest to see who can come up with the best safety message for dynamic message signs on interstates.
According to WBIR TV, TDOT’s goal with these messages is to raise awareness of highway safety.
The contest gives Tennessee motorists an opportunity to help save lives.
Last year’s winning entry was, “Texting and driving, Oh cell no!”
Throughout other states’ departments of transportation, there were custom signs for Thanksgiving and Christmas. There were even a few special signs on the day the new Star Wars movie hit theaters.
Contestants are asked to enter a message for one of the following categories: speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, seat belts and aggressive driving.
The contest runs from Tuesday through Feb. 2.
Voting for the best sign runs from Feb. 16 through March 1.
Go to TDOT’s website for more information on the sign contest.

CHS Wrestlers Struggle On Monday Night at Tullahoma
Missing 5 wrestlers due to illness, the Coffee County Red Raider wrestling team failed to gain a match victory on Monday night in the Tullahoma Border War dual meet. More importantly, Coffee County dropped 3 crucial district matches which eliminated them from the possibility of competing in next week’s Region 5 Duals that they will host. “Giving up 30 points before you ever hit the mat is hard to overcome against any competition” said Red Raider head coach Roger Barlow following the meet. Coffee County fell 42 to 27 to Franklin County, 60 to 22 to Shelbyville and 66 to 18 to Tullahoma who won the team championship.
Regardless of the disappointing team result, there were several strong individual performances from the wrestlers that were able to compete. Josh Tobitt continued his strong January performance as he was 3 for 3 on the night with 3 pinfall wins. Tobitt wrestled at 182 pounds in 2 of his matches and took the mat in the 195 pound class against Franklin County. Michael Pressley(170) got pinfall wins against Franklin County and Tullahoma. Dustin Seals(285) got a pair of pinfall wins over Tullahoma and Shelbyville. Owen Teague(145) scored a pin against Shelbyville and a decision win versus Franklin County. And Rein Bozich(138) scored a forfeit win against Franklin County and a major decision against Shelbyville.
The CHS grapplers return home on Thursday night as they welcome Smyrna and Warren County to their home dojo at the Coffee County Raider Academy. The dual meet will get underway at 6 PM. The Region 5 Dual meet will be held on Thursday, January 28th and will be held at the Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gymnasium.
