2/1/20– Charles R. Carter

Charles R. Carter of Manchester, passed this life on Tuesday, January 28,
2020 at St. Thomas West Hospital in Nashville at the age of 54. Funeral
Services are scheduled for 5 PM, Saturday, February 1, 2020 at
Daves-Culbertson Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 3 PM
until the service time.

A native of Alabama, he was the son of the late Charles Kenneth Carter and
Claudia Casteel Carter, who survives.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing and
collecting antiques.  He loved helping people. His favorite times were
spent playing with his granddaughter, Riley and his beloved pet German
Shepard, Gemma.

In addition to his mother, Claudia Carter of Estill Springs, Mr. Carter is
survived by his wife, Betty Ann Carter of Manchester; daughters, Elizabeth
Carter of Manchester and Tabetha Carter of Tullahoma; brother, Chris Carter
of Estill Springs; sister, Crystal Carter of Estill Springs and
granddaughter, Riley Ann Carter.

2/8/2020– Larry Melvin Barnhardt

Memorial services for Mr. Larry Melvin Barnhardt, age 67, of Manchester, TN, will be conducted at 4:00 PM on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at Bell Springs United Methodist Church with Pastor Roger Brown officiating. Larry passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, TN.

Larry was born in Oak Ridge, TN, the son of the late Melvin Seagle Barnhardt and the late Mary Gretchen Keener Barnhardt. Larry worked in the warehouse for the Rutherford County Co-op in Lavergne, TN. He was an avid Tennessee Vol fan.

Larry is survived by one sister, Linda (Ron) White; several cousins; numerous friends; and his loving cat, Joe.

1/31/20– Tony Earl Lawson

Tony Earl Lawson of Tullahoma, passed this life on Wednesday, January 29,
2020 at Alive Hospice in Murfreesboro at the age of 73. Graveside Services
are scheduled for 1 PM, Friday, January 31, 2020 at Maplewood Cemetery.

A native of Coffee County, he was the son of the late Clarence Edward and
Effie Mae Evans Lawson.  He was a U S Army Veteran and a member of the
Canaan Baptist Church in Tullahoma, where he served as a Deacon.  Tony was
the owner of TEL Tax Service and also owned and operated the Goody Wagon in
Tullahoma.  Mr. Lawson loved driving the ice cream truck thru the
neighborhoods in Tullahoma and providing treats to the children.  He always
loved being around kids and coached Little League for several years.  He
also enjoyed fishing and being with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by brothers,
James, Frankie, Doyle, Clarence “Bug”, Lacy and G W Lawson and sisters,
Frances Thomas and Bessie Lawson.

Mr. Lawson is survived by his loving wife of almost 44 years, Mary Jane
Cherry Lawson of Tullahoma; daughters, Tonya Lawson of Murfreesboro,
Mechelle Lawson of Tullahoma and Mandy Contreras of Murfreesboro and his
loving pet dog, Chester.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial donations be made in
his honor to Daves-Culbertson Funeral Home.

1/31/20 — Ronnie Edward “Scooter” Anderson

Funeral services for Mr. Ronnie Edward “Scooter” Anderson, age 66, of Manchester, TN, will be conducted at 12:00 PM on Friday, January 31, 2020 at Manchester Funeral Home with Bro. Mike Anderson officiating.  Burial will follow in Farrar Hill Cemetery.  Visitation with the family will be from 10:00 AM until time of services at the funeral home.  Mr. Anderson passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at Alive Hospice in Murfreesboro, TN.

Scooter was born in Manchester, TN, the son of the late Claude and Marie Holt Anderson.  He was a laborer at Temco and loved to tell jokes and aggrevate.

In addition to his parents, Scooter was also preceded in death by one brother, Robert Lee Anderson; his grandmother, Bessie Anderson; and an aunt, Christine Anderson.  He is survived by his children, Bessie Mae Anderson and Candy Michelle Anderson; grandchildren, Gabriel and Dakota Goodson and Joshua Lee Harding, II; brother, Tony (Carol) Anderson; sisters, Mary Ellen (Billy) Majors and Sarah (Richard) Felts; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Coffee County Gets Another District Sweep on Tuesday; Defeats Franklin County Squads

Coffee County Lady Raider head coach Joe Pat Cope is presented the game ball and a cake by the Lady Raiders basketball team following Tuesday’s game which was his 200th career victory.

The Coffee County CHS basketball teams welcomed Franklin County to the Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gym on Tuesday.   The Lady Raiders gave Coach Joe Pat Cope his 200th career win with a 51 to 24 triumph over the Rebelettes.  The Red Raiders avenged their only district loss of the year in a 72 to 44 win.  In the process, Coffee County swept their 9th straight doubleheader dating back to December.

The Rebelettes came out in a zone defense daring the Lady Raiders to shoot the outside shot to beat them.  The Lady Raiders were up to that task hitting 12 First National Bank 3 pointers on the way to the win.  Coffee County jumped out to a 9 to 1 lead in the first 2 minutes and never trailed in the contest.  Freshman Jalie Ruehling was the leading scorer for the Lady Raiders as she finished with 15 points to be named the Stone Fort Mortgage player of the game. Ellie Chumbley finished with 8 points and Marley Perry, Bella Vinson and Ellie Graham all tacked on 6 points apiece.  The win moves Coffee County’s record to 21 and 3 overall and 8 and 0 in district play.

The Red Raiders held the Rebels scoreless in the 4th quarter as they rolled to their 7th straight district win.  Coffee County had great ball movement all game long as they raced out to a 23 to 10 lead in the 1st quarter.  Franklin County cut the lead to 9 in the 3rd quarter before the Red Raiders dominated the final period.  Jaxon Vaughn was the leading scorer for Coffee County as he had 19 points to earn the Stone Fort Mortgage player of the game honor.  Rod Brinkley came off the bench to score 11 points.  C.J. Anthony and Kyle Farless each netted 8 for the Red Raiders. The win moves Coffee County’s record to 16 and 6 overall and 7 and 1 in district play. 

Coffee County travels to Shelbyville on Friday to take on the Eagles and Eaglettes.  Thunder Radio will be on hand to bring you all the action.  Opening tip is set for 6 PM; we begin our live coverage with the Char-El Apartments and Home Rental Pregame Show at 5:50.

CCMS Lady Raiders Fall in TMSAA Sectional on Tuesday

The Coffee County Middle School Lady Raider basketball team opened play in the TMSAA Sectional Tournament on Tuesday night at Stewarts Creek Middle School.  The Lady Raiders matched up against Rockvale Middle in a rematch of a battle from November 7th.   Coffee County saw their season come to a close in a 37 to 31 defeat.

Leading 16 to 14 at the half, the Lady Raiders saw Rockvale outscore them 12 to 6 in the 3rd quarter to take a lead they would not surrender.  Rockvale hit 11 of their 17 free throws in the 4th quarter to salt away the victory.   Taylor Anthony was the leading scorer for the Lady Raiders as she finished with 9 points.  Channah Gannon dropped in 7 points and Olivia Vinson netted 6 points for the Lady Raiders.  Coffee County finished the year with a final record of 19 and 7 while finishing in 2nd place in the CTC regular season, postseason tournament and Area 6 tournament. 

The Red Raiders of CCMS will open tournament play on Wednesday when they square off against Blackman Middle at 4:30 PM at Stewarts Creek Middle.  Thunder Radio will be on hand to bring you all the action.  Our live coverage will begin at approximately 4:25.

Middle School Swimmers Conclude Season at Region Meet on Saturday

The Westwood Middle and Coffee County Middle School swim teams closed out their season on Saturday in the MTHSSA Regional Championship in Nashville. Seven members of the Coffee County Middle School squad qualified for regionals while 5 members of the Westwood Middle School team posted qualifying times.

On the day, Abby Gilday of Westwood was the top finisher as she qualified for the finals in the 200 freestyle and finished in 15th place. In the team relays, the Westwood girls finished in 28th place in the 200 freestyle relay and 31st place in the 200 Medley Relay. Individual finishers were:
Abby Gilday – 15th 200 freestyle(finals – 11th in prelims); 16th 500 freestyle
Elsie Lazalier – 29th 100 freestyle; 38th 100 breaststroke
Ansley Beachboard – 50th – 100 breaststroke; 233rd 50 free
Cale Hays – 135th – 50 free;

1/26/20– Paul Moews

Paul “Snake” or “Tony” Moews of Normandy, passed this life on Sunday,
January 26, 2020 at Tennova Healthcare of Shelbyville, at the age of 63. No
services are scheduled.

A native of Bloomington, IL, he was the son of the late Paul Moews and
Charlotte Probus Moews of Bloomington, who survives.  He enjoyed watching
old Western TV shows and cartoons on TV.  He was an animal lover and was a
hat collector.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robbie
Moews.

Mr. Moews is survived by his mother, Charlotte Moews of Blomington, IL;
wife, Sharon Moews of Normandy; sons, Troy Moews of Springfield, IL, Dan
Enyeart (Nikki) and Jerry Enyeart (Kelli), both of South Bend, IN and Rich
Enyeart of Mishawaka, IN; daughter, Shan Rodriguez (Marc) of Osceola, IN;
brothers, Mike Moews (Terri) of Bloomington, IL and Ricky Moews (Cindy) of
FL; sister, Paula Vandegraft (Mike) Bloomington, IL; seven grandchildren
and seven great grandchildren.

1/30/20– Sarah Helena Brandon

Funeral services for Ms. Sarah Helena Brandon, age 78, of Murfreesboro, will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Thursday, January 30, 2020, at Manchester Funeral Home with Brother Nicky Nichols officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, January 29, 2020, at the funeral home. Ms. Brandon passed from this life on Monday, January 27, 2020, at the Community Care of Rutherford County in Murfreesboro, TN.

Helena was born in Bedford County, TN to the late Mannie and Alberta Lowe. She was the owner of Helena’s Flowers for over 30 years. Helena loved flowers, to read, and to travel the world. Most importantly though, she loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was a loving mother, sister, and grandmother.

In addition to her parents, Helena is also preceded in death by one son, Johnny Brandon; one grandchild, Justin Foster; two brothers, David and Clebern Lowe; two sisters, Vinita Norris and Wanda Noblitt. She is survived by one son, Danny Brandon (Rita); two sisters, Joyce Frazier and Jodi Warren; five grandchildren, Jesse Foster, Ashley Farmer, Chase Brandon, Reece Brandon, and Sarah Brandon; five great-grandchildren, Skylar, Gage, Catori, Declan, and Blair.

CHS Freshmen Lady Raider Basketball Falls on Monday Night

The Coffee County CHS freshmen Lady Raiders welcomed Cannon County to the Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gym on Monday.   The Red Raiders game with Cannon County was cancelled at the request of the Lion’s coach.  The Lady Raiders fought hard before falling 40 to 35. 

Coffee County came close to getting the upset.  The Lady Raiders went on an 11 to 0 run in the 2nd quarter to grab a halftime lead.  Leading by 1 point entering the 4th quarter, the Lady Raiders turned the ball over in crucial situations as Cannon County rallied for the win.  Coffee County was strong at the free throw line hitting 13 of 17 for the game.  The Lady Raiders were led in scoring by Maggie Crouch who had 15 points.  Nia Sheffield had 9 points and Kennedy Norman-Young finished with 5.
