Revitalization in Downtown Tullahoma

Tullahoma Welcome SignIf you haven’t driven in downtown Tullahoma you have missed some of the construction work going on in the area. Recently the area of Atlantic was closed off while work was being done as part of the downtown revitalization effort. This week crews have had a section of East Lincoln in the downtown area blocked off while they installed some brick work at the intersection of Lincoln and Jackson Street. The work will continue for several more weeks in the downtown area as the workers continue to revitalize the area. The work is being done through a state grant.

RC-MoonPie Festival is Saturday in Bell Buckle

moon_pieThe wackiness that only Bell Buckle can perfect is back THIS SATURDAY (June 18,2016)! There’s not a better day during the year than the day of the Bell Buckle Chamber of Commerce’s annual RC-MoonPie Festival held the 3rd Saturday in June for 22 years! They are very excited to announce that the April 2016 USA Today’s food and wine guide chose the Bell Buckle RC-MoonPie Festival as one of the sweetest festivals in the nation.
There’s so much for everyone to enjoy with a large selection of arts and crafts booths, music, cloggers, contests, and gobs of good Southern food fare! The grand finale of the day is the cutting and serving of the World’s Largest MoonPie – where Bell Buckle says “Let them eat PIE!”
This old fashioned celebration of the South’s first fast food is truly a bucket list experience with the down home atmosphere and entertaining quirkiness that shines most brightly in Bell Buckle.

Federal Court Backs FCC’s Treatment of Internet as Utility

A win in federal court for consumers, say advocates of net neutrality. (Greg Stotelmyer)

A federal court has upheld the Federal Communication Commission’s decision to treat the Internet like a utility – a victory for consumers say advocates of net neutrality. The 2-to-1 ruling came Tuesday from the U.S. Court of Appeals for Washington, D.C. Marty Newell, a member of the Rural Broadband Policy Group, says the court ruling is “part of the march” to treating broadband the same way we treat telephone service. “It’s not optional,” he stresses. “It’s not a luxury. There was a time when Internet access might have been considered a luxury, but it’s not now. That time has passed. “It’s a necessity in the same way that we looked at the telephone once upon a time.” The cable and telecom industries and their allies argue that the FCC’s rule is overreaching and would stifle investment and customer choice. But Newell and other advocates say web users need more protections from providers. Newell says the ruling is especially important in rural areas of the country that are underserved by broadband. Take Kentucky for example, where Newell says around one out of every four households does not have access to broadband services. “We don’t have as much choice,” he points out. “The competition is not nearly as great. “It is critical that this communications tool that it is absolutely essential to do business in the 21st century, that it be an open system.” The Rural Broadband Policy Group says of the 19 million Americans who don’t have broadband, more than 14 million live in rural parts of the country. Noting a lot of money is at stake, Newell says he knows the legal challenges will continue, something the industry giants have promised.

BBB Warning

BBBIn the wake of the Orlando Pulse Nightclub shooting, the Better Business Bureau is warning people who want to donate money to help those impacted.
After a major disaster or tragedy, the BBB sees an increase in fraudulent charities soliciting donations.
“This is a worthy cause to give to,” BBB CEO Kathleen Calligan said. “But, before you click, do your homework.”
The BBB said you should be wary of charities who solicit donations door –to- door. Also, be careful of charities that pop-up and do not have a track record of charitable giving that you can verify.
A GoFundMe set up by Equality Florida raised more than $4.4 million in the first three days.
A separate GoFundMe set up by The Center of Orlando has raised more than $300,000 for the victims.
You can also check out a charity with the BBB’s charitable giving alliance website give.org.

Freeman Cycle Lifts Braves to Extra Inning Win

Braves2Freddie Freeman hit the first cycle of the 2016 season on Wednesday night, and Chase d’Arnaud sealed the win with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 13th inning to help the Braves outlast the Reds, 9-8, at Turner Field.

The Braves jumped on Reds starter Anthony DeSclafani early, taking a 1-0 lead in the first before adding three unearned runs in the third. The right-hander labored through his second start of the season, throwing 76 pitches in just 2 2/3 innings.
Bud Norris, meanwhile, didn’t surrender a hit until Brandon Phillips registered a single during the Reds’ three-run fourth. The right-hander ultimately allowed three hits and three runs while issuing two walks and striking out seven batters over five innings. Since returning to Atlanta’s starting rotation on June 4, Norris has posted a 2.65 ERA over three starts.
The Braves’ bullpen couldn’t back up Norris, however, as Casey Kelly entered the game in the sixth and surrendered three more to hand the Reds a 6-5 lead, but Freeman’s home run in the bottom of the frame tied the game at 6.
Neither team managed to break the tie over the next six innings, until Reds shortstop Jose Peraza drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the 13th. Joey Votto gave Cincinnati a two-run cushion with an RBI single in the ensuing at-bat, but an RBI double by Jace Peterson and an RBI single by Tyler Flowers in the bottom of the frame set the stage for the Braves’ second walk-off win of the season.
The Braves chased DeSclafani with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Peterson hit a grounder to first that allowed Freeman to score on Votto’s errant throw home. One out later, Erick Aybar cracked a two-run double to center to give the Braves a 4-0 lead. DeSclafani was lifted after walking the next batter, Norris.
Breaking through: Leading off the top of the sixth, Phillips made his way to second on a single and a throwing error by Adonis Garcia. The Reds capitalized on the mistake, as Jay Bruce singled to bring in Phillips and cut the Braves’ lead to 5-4. After Adam Duvall doubled, Ivan De Jesus Jr. gave the Reds their first lead on a two-run single, picking up his second and third RBIs of the game

Sounds Use Eight-Run Third to Rout Redbirds

Sounds6The Nashville Sounds scored eight runs in the third inning on their way to a 16-3 blowout win over the Memphis Redbirds in front of 5,016 fans Wednesday afternoon at First Tennessee Park.

13 batters went to the plate in the huge inning. The eight runs scored in the frame are the most since the Sounds scored nine runs in the sixth inning back on April 12, 2015 at Colorado Springs.

Andrew Lambo and Ryon Healy both had a pair of hits in the inning. Their four hits combined to drive in five of the eight runs.

Other hits in the frame came from Rangel Ravelo, Joey Wendle and Jaycob Brugman. Chad Pinder drew a walk and was hit by a pitch and scored runs on both occasions.

The eight-run outburst came after the Sounds had already built a 4-0 lead. Lambo got the scoring started with a sacrifice fly in the first inning.

Ravelo blasted a two-run homer in the second off Memphis starter Arturo Reyes who lasted just two-plus innings. He was charged with eight earned runs in the loss.

The beneficiary of the offensive support was Nashville starter Dillon Overton. The southpaw worked seven strong innings and allowed two unearned runs on just four hits. Overton issued one walk and struck out six.

Over his last six starts, he is 6-0 with a 1.67 ERA. He joins Zach Neal as Nashville starters who have won six straight decisions this season.

The Sounds pounded out 18 hits, just one shy of their season-high 19 on May 26 in Las Vegas. Lambo led the charge with a season-high four hits and five RBI. Wendle and Pinder had three hits apiece and six different players racked up multi-hit games. Five different players recorded at least two runs batted in.

Pinder homered for the second time in as many days and scored four times.

With the win, the Sounds are 40-26 on the season. They’re the first Triple-A team to the 40-win mark in 2016. Last year’s Sounds team didn’t get to 40 wins until July 9.

The series finale is set for Thursday night at First Tennessee Park. Right-hander Chris Jensen makes the first Triple-A start of his career against right-hander Jerome Williams (1-1, 1.93). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
