After two of the biggest regular-season goals in recent memory, Martin Methodist Women’s Soccer forward Katie Reid has been named the NAIA National Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Reid, a 5-foot-7 junior from Manchester, Tennessee, won the award thanks to a two-goal, two-assist performance in a 1-0-1 week last week for Martin Methodist.
Reid notched the game-winning goal in the RedHawks (9-1-3) victory over No. 3 William Carey (Miss.) University last Saturday. The junior also bagged the game-tying goal in an eventual 2-2 draw against No. 7 University of Mobile (Ala.) last Thursday.
Reid also added an assist in each contest as the RedHawks leapt from No. 8 to No. 3 in the latest NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.
The goals were the fourth and fifth of the season for Reid, who is no stranger to clutch goals. The junior scored at the NAIA Women’s Soccer national tournament in both of the last two seasons and has now notched four match-winning goals in her career.
With the selection, Reid becomes just the ninth RedHawk – regardless of sport – to achieve Player of the Week status at the national level. Four other RedHawk Women’s Soccer performers have achieved the distinction prior to Reid.
Former RedHawk forward Mor Efraim was the last Women’s Soccer standout to achieve the mark, winning the honor twice in the 2011 season.
“Katie was fantastic last week for us in our two biggest matches of the year,” RedHawks head coach Will Austin said. “She delivered the equalizer on Thursday and then dug deep for the match-winner on Saturday. Given the level of competition she faced, that is a remarkable achievement and it is a delight to see her honored for those performances.”

New Classifications Set By TSSAA

TSSAAThe Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association(TSSAA) released new classification breakdowns for Tennessee High School sports beginning with the school year 2017 and continuing thru 2021. New in this classification period is more separation in classification for some sports. In years past, volleyball, soccer, cross country, track & field, golf and tennis have shared classification with basketball, softball and baseball. In the new system, basketball, baseball and softball will remain classified together in classes split evenly by enrollment. Each of the other sports mentioned will be broken out into 3 classifications evenly by participating schools. Wrestling will continue to be broken out into 2 classes mirroring the classifications for basketball. Football will remain in 6 classes, split evenly by enrollment.
As expected, Coffee County will be placed in the highest classification for each sport. Coffee County Central was classified based on an enrollment of 1,733 students which ranks CHS as the 34th largest school in Division 1 out of 258 schools classified for sports. Schools will have until Noon central time on October 25, 2016 to notify the state office of their wish to move up in any of the classification plans. Once the deadline passes, the state office staff, with input from Board members, will set districts and regions and post them to the TSSAA website when complete. Schools that disagree with their placement will have the opportunity to request an appeal before the Board of Control at the November scheduled meeting set for November 17th.
A complete listing of where Coffee County will be classified can be found at the TSSAA website at: http://tssaa.org/school-classifications-by-sport-2017-2021/

Charges Dismissed in Clown Case

Coffee County District Attorney Craig Northcott

Coffee County District Attorney Craig Northcott

On Friday night Sept. 23, 2016 the Coffee County Communications Center notified officers that a call had come in with the caller identifying himself as the clown who has been threatening children. According to the arrest warrant, the subject became very lewd with the dispatcher talking sexually with her and stating he was going to harm children. He also allegedly stated that he was going to kidnap children and her, cut their ears off and other lewd acts. The call came through the non-emergency line and was not traceable. 64 year-old George Randy Hoppe of Manchester was charged in the case.
According to District Attorney Craig Northcott, “After an investigation, it was discovered that Hoppe was not the person who made the calls and charges were dismissed.” Northcott says his office is investigating possible charges against another individual concerning this case. It is unknown if the two individuals are connected.

Warren County man facing TennCare Fraud Charges

Matthew Haycox

Matthew Haycox

A man who fled to Michigan to evade capture has been arrested and charged with TennCare fraud for selling prescription drugs paid for by the state’s healthcare insurance program.
The Office of Inspector General (OIG) has announced the arrest of Matthew Haycox, 46, formerly of McMinnville, after a joint investigation with the Warren County Sheriff’s Office. An indictment in Warren County accuses him of TennCare fraud and three counts of delivery of a Schedule II controlled substance. The indictment says Haycox used TennCare benefits to obtain the painkiller Morphine, which he sold to an undercover informant. He then fled to Michigan where he was incarcerated on unrelated charges. When he was released, he was brought back to Warren County where he was served with the four outstanding indictments.
As of July 1, 2016, TennCare fraud was changed to a Class D felony punishable by up to four years in prison.
The OIG, which is separate from TennCare, began full operation in February 2005 and has investigated cases leading to more than $3 million being repaid to TennCare, with a total estimated cost avoidance of more than $163.6 million for TennCare, according to latest figures. To date, 2,742 people have been charged with TennCare fraud.
Anyone can report suspected TennCare fraud by calling 1-800-433-3982 toll-free from anywhere in Tennessee, or visit the website and follow prompts that read “Report TennCare Fraud.”

Small Increase for Social Security Recipients

social-securityMillions of Social Security recipients and federal retirees will get a 0.3 percent increase in monthly benefits next year, the fifth year in a row that older Americans will have to settle for historically low raises. The adjustment adds up to a monthly increase of less than $4 a month for an average recipient.
The cost-of-living adjustment, announced by the government Tuesday, will affect more than 70 million people – about 1 in 5 Americans. For recipients, the average monthly Social Security payment now is $1,238.
Unfortunately for some seniors, even the small increase will probably be wiped out by an expected increase in Medicare Part B premiums, which are usually deducted from Social Security payments.

Hometown Hero for October

Sgt. Chris Paterson

Sgt. Chris Paterson

Al White Motors and WMSR (Thunder Radio) are teaming up to honor those who serve that thin blue line, our local law enforcement. Each month someone in law enforcement will be honored as a Hometown Hero.
Our hero this month is Sgt. Chris Patterson with the Manchester Police Department. After receiving a degree in Criminal Justice from MTSU he attended the police academy in 2000. He began his career in law enforcement the same year with the Warren County Sheriff’s Department as a School Resource Officer. Patterson was hired in 2005 by the Manchester Police Department as a patrol officer. Patterson was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2012, taking over the training duties of the department. He is in charge of all training for the officers of Manchester PD. The department also provides training in multiple facets relating to law enforcement, he schedules and instructs for both the law enforcement and civilian arena. Sgt. Patterson has the difficult task of maintaining the department to P.O.S.T. standards, both in training and personnel. He is also the liaison between the department and the Governors Highway Safety Office, applying for grants and training provided at no cost to the citizens. Patterson is a very valuable asset to the department and the City of Manchester. Citizens are fortunate to have someone with his abilities, knowledge and education as part of the administrative staff of the department.
We are continuing to ask for the public’s help for more hometown heroes. Go to our Facebook page or the Al White Ford Lincoln Mercury Facebook page to nominate a law enforcement official. Tell us why you think someone that serves Coffee County in law enforcement deserves to be chosen as a “Hometown Hero”. The man or woman that is selected each month will be recognized on WMSRradio.com and receive a nice surprise from Al White Motors.
Thank you to all that serve and protect us, our Hometown Heroes.

Motlow State Women’s Soccer Program to Hold Tryout Nov. 12

Motlow Lady BucksThe new Motlow State Community College women’s soccer program will hold its first tryout on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Johnson Lane Recreational Fields in Tullahoma, according to Head Coach Andy Lyon. The tryout session is scheduled from 10 a.m. – noon.

“The tryouts will allow me to watch players and see how they mesh with different groups and situations,” said Lyon, who was hired to lead the new program in August. “I am extremely excited to get started. Those that try out will get to see the caliber of student-athletes that have already expressed an interest in our program.”

The tryout is open to high school seniors and to those who are current Motlow freshman students. Attendees must bring appropriate clothing and footwear, and must bring proof of a completed physical examination within the previous 13 months.

“There has been a very encouraging amount of interest in the program since it was announced in late July,” added Lyon. “I have received nothing but encouragement from the soccer community and I am confident that we are going to field a team that they can be proud of.”

For further information about the tryout and the Motlow women’s soccer program, contact Coach Lyon at alyon@mscc.edu or 931-393-1622.
