After falling to tournament runner-up Grainger on Tuesday, the Red Raider basketball team won 2 straight games in the King of the Smokies Tournament at Pigeon Forge to capture 5th place on Thursday.  Coffee County outlasted Cullman, AL on Thursday 62 to 58.  The Red Raiders were 11 of 16 at the free throw line in the 4th quarter to hold on for the win.

Balanced scoring was the theme of the day as Coffee County was able to score between 13 and 17 points in each quarter.  To extend that trend, the Raiders also had 4 players finish in double figures as Stephen Sullivan and Grant Sadler tied for high scoring honors with 16 points apiece.  Tyrese McGee added 11 points and Garrett Eldridge netted 10 for the Red Raiders who improved to 12 and 3 on the season. Following the game, Stephen Sullivan was selected to the All-Tournament team.

The Raiders will be back in action on Tuesday when they return home for a district doubleheader with Lincoln County.  The girls’ game is set to tip off at 6 PM, Thunder Radio will bring you live coverage beginning with the Char-El Apartments and Home Rental pregame show at 5:50.

Forcing 32 turnovers by Sale Creek and hitting 11 of their 15 free throws lifted the Coffee County Lady Raider basketball team to a 70 to 29 trouncing of Sale Creek on Thursday morning in the Whitwell Christmas Tournament.  The Lady Raiders opened up with the first 9 points of the game and never trailed.

Despite the 9 AM start, the Lady Raiders were wide awake at the opening tip as they raced out to a 19 to 2 lead in the first 6 minutes.  Sale Creek was able to cut the lead to 8 in the second period as Coach Herb Horton had emptied his bench.  The Lady Raiders responded to close out the half on a 14 to 2 run to seal the Lady Panthers’ fate.

Eight different Lady Raiders scored on the game led by Jacey Vaughn who netted 17 points.  Abby Morgan finished 15 points and Ashley Starks added 11 points.

The Lady Raiders will return to Whitwell on Friday as they will battle for 5th place.  The Lady Raiders will take on the host Lady Tigers beginning at Noon.

2016 Year in Review – Middle School and High School Softball

As 2016 draws to a close, Thunder Radio Sports looks back at some of the highlights of the calendar year for each of the 12 prep sports.  Today we look back at the highlights from the prep softball teams.  The Lady Rockets of Westwood continued their rebuilding efforts in the spring as they fielded a young team with a lot of potential.  The team began showing improvement as they reached the conference tournament recording a 17 to 2 win over Huntland on April 15th.

Thunder Radio reported on their success with the following story we published on April 16th

Madison Hershman of Westwood softball

Banging out 11 hits and collecting 19 walks helped the Westwood Lady Rockets softball team crush Huntland 17 to 2 on Friday night in the elimination round of the Duck River Valley Conference. Madison Wakefield led the Rocket assault as she 3 for 4 on the day with 3 RBI. Haidyn Campbell, Hallie Wimberley and Alex Nelson all finished with 2 hits apiece as Nelson also had 3 RBI. Kiely Featherson walked all 5 times she batted on Friday night to earn 3 RBI herself and perhaps become the first player in the history of the sport to be patient enough to earn 5 walks. Campbell earned the win in the circle has she scattered 3 hits and struck out 10 Lady Hornet batters. Westwood advances to Saturday’s 3rd round where they take on either Moore County or Community at 9 AM at Huntland.

The Coffee County Middle School Lady Raiders advanced to the finals of the CTC Tournament before falling to Warren County on April 23rd.

Thunder Radio reported on their tournament run with the following story we published on April 23rd

After falling on Friday night to Warren County in the winner’s bracket finals of the CTC Softball Tournament, the Lady Raiders of Coffee County Middle School needed 3 wins on Saturday to claim their 2nd straight conference title. In a scene reminiscent of last season, the Lady Raiders fought and clawed their way back to the championship game before falling to Warren County 10 to 2 on Saturday afternoon.
On Saturday morning, the Lady Raiders opened up with a rematch against Tullahoma as these 2 teams squared off for the 4th time in 11 days. The Lady Raiders jumped out to a 6 to 0 lead only to see the Lady Cats rally in the 5th inning to plate 3 runs. Coffee County quelled the rally with the tying run at the plate to seal the 6 to 3 win. Against the Cats, Ashley Evans was 3 for 3 with 3 runs scored, Gracie Pippenger was 2 for 2 with a double and a sacrifice and Keelie Hillis was 2 for 3 with 2 doubles.
The Tullahoma win set up a rematch with Warren County in which the Lady Raiders needed a win to force an “if” game and a chance at the title. After surrendering a run in the 1st inning, Coffee County got a 3 run rally in the 3rd inning by the bottom of their batting order. Maci Head finished the game with 2 hits in 2 trips to the plate and a run scored to lead Coffee County to the 3 to 2 win. Kyla Craig and Abigail Parker each added a run for the Lady Raiders to set up a winner-take-all championship match.
With one out in the top of the first inning, Gracie Pippenger crushed a solo home run to fill the Lady Raider fans with hope and confidence. Not to be deterred, the regular season champion Lady Pioneers tied the game in the bottom of the first and used a 6 run 4th inning to seal the 12 to 2 win over Coffee County in the 5th conference meeting of the year between these 2 teams. Warren County only lost twice in conference play this season and both losses came at the hands of the Lady Raiders. Evans finished the game going 2 for 3 with a triple and the only other run scored for Coffee County. The Lady Raiders finished the year with a record of 23 and 7.

The Central High School Lady Raiders clinched their 9th straight regular season district title with a 2 to 0 win over Tullahoma on April 26th.

Thunder Radio reported on their success with the following story we published on April 27th

Kaylee Skipper of CHS Softball

If there is one thing that local sports fans have come to expect, it is a district championship for Lady Raider softball. On Tuesday night Kaylee Skipper pitched a brilliant game as she scattered 5 hits and struck out 4 in the Lady Raiders 2 to 0 win over Tullahoma at Terry Floyd Field. The win also guaranteed the Lady Raiders a regular season district title for what is believed to be the 9th year in a row.  The Lady Raiders finish the district season with a record of 11 and 1.
Tullahoma opened the game hot with a pair of singles before a fielder’s choice and a double play ended the threat. The Lady Cats had base runners in 6 of the game’s 7 innings, but could not push a run across against Skipper as the Lady Raiders’ timely defense was the story of the game. For her shutout performance, Skipper was tabbed as the Thunder Radio player of the game.
Coffee County got on the board in the 4th inning when Tatum Baldwin, running for Tori Bell, scored from 1st base on a single by Brianna Roberson and an error on the Tullahoma right fielder. The Lady Raiders added an insurance run in the 6th when Katie Rutledge got on base on an infield single and scored on a Paige Baker single after the Tullahoma left fielder bobbled the ball. Abby Woods and Kasarah Scheller also had singles as the Lady Raiders managed only 5 hits but reached base 4 times after being hit by a pitch.
On Thursday night, Coffee County will play host to Oakland when they host the inaugural “Green-Out Game” to promote Organ Donation Awareness. A special pregame will feature specials guests and everyone is encouraged to wear green. First pitch is slated for 7 PM. Thunder Radio will bring you the broadcast beginning with the pregame show at 6:50.

Preds Fall to Blackhawks

Two goals in the third period from the visiting Chicago Blackhawks helped them to a 3-2 win over the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena on Thursday night. The result moves Nashville to 15-14-6 overall on the season and 8-7-1 against the Central Division.

“We have to learn from it, stick with it,” Captain Mike Fisher said. “We can’t get frustrated or down. It is frustrating, no question. But, we have to learn from it, and it’s going to start going our way. It’s going to start falling our way once we start making some better plays throughout the game, but I thought we played a pretty solid game tonight, it just didn’t fall our way.”

Filip Forsberg recorded his fourth goal in his last five games when he beat Corey Crawford in the first period and Fisher gave Nashville a 2-1 lead with a goal on the man advantage at 6:13 of the third, his team-leading fifth on the power play.

A controversial tripping call on Craig Smith in the final frame led to a power-play goal from Jonathan Toews to make it 2-2, and Patrick Kane gave the Blackhawks their final lead of the night with less than six minutes to play.

“I won’t get into calls, but we just have to find a way to kill that [penalty],” Fisher said. “Then, they get a break and odd-man rushes. I thought we battled pretty hard; it was a hard game. We had chances, we just have to execute better.”

Nashville outshot Chicago 38-23 on the night, with Head Coach Peter Laviolette believing his team played well enough to win, but the group also knows victories are necessary to stay in the thick of things as the 2016 calendar year nears its end.

“The victories always matter,” Laviolette said. “We have to get two points and put them in the column. With that, I think, comes a process and [we] want the process to be right. I think our guys did a lot of good things out there tonight and didn’t get rewarded for that. We’re going to move on to tomorrow night.”

“In our division, it feels like everyone is winning,” Forsberg said. “Especially now when we lose division games, other teams are going to get ahead of us. We have to realize the moment; we still have half of the season left, but at the same time, you can’t just push the reset button after the New Year… it’s not going to happen like that. You have to get more urgent and string some wins together.”

The Predators have another shot at two points tomorrow night when they face the Blues in St. Louis, an opportunity they’re anxious to have.

“Sometimes, you go through ups and downs and it’s how you learn from it, how you come out of it,” Fisher said. “It’s making us really come together and we need to find ways and just stay up, that’s all you can do.”

Notes:

P.K. Subban (day-to-day, upper-body) missed Thursday’s game against Chicago and has also been ruled out of Friday’s contest.

James Neal left Thursday’s game with an upper-body injury and did not return.

With two assists tonight, Ryan Johansen has 17 points (6g-11a) and six multi-point games in his last 17 contests.

The Predators head to St. Louis to face the Blues on Friday at Scottrade Center to finish the second half of their current back-to-back set.  Thunder Radio will bring you the broadcast as part of the Nashville Predators Radio Network beginning at 7 PM.

Tullahoma Police Investigating Promotion of Obscene Material

Tullahoma Police are investigating allegations of promotion of obscene material that allegedly occurred recently.
A Monteagle woman reported to Tullahoma Police Sgt. Robert Weaver that her estranged husband had been sending explicit pictures of her to other people. She stated that a co-worker told her that an individual who had received one of the pictures had shown them one of the pictures on their phone.
Detective Rana Pawlowski is investigating the allegation.

Sheriff’s Department to get Three New Vehicles

Coffee County Sheriff Steve Graves.

When deputy patrol cars get 170,000-200,000 miles on them, they can become dangerous, says Coffee County Sheriff Steve Graves.
The sheriff’s department owns 26 marked patrol units, with almost half of them purchased before 2011 and some purchased as early as 2003.
Graves and Patrol Capt. Danny Ferrell recently asked the Coffee County Budget and Finance Committee for funding for four vehicles. The committee agreed to 3 of the 4 because they say there concerned there could be a need for a new ambulance before the end of the fiscal year.
Graves said he appreciates the committee allowing his department to purchase three, but added it will take 3-4 months to get new units on the road.
