CHS Basketball Sweeps Lincoln County to Open 2017

Hoping to start the new year off on a winning note on Tuesday night, Coffee County welcomed Lincoln County to the Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gym.  The Raiders and Lady Raiders captured the district basketball doubleheader sweep over with the visiting Falcons and Lady Falcons to begin 2017 with a bang.  The Lady Raiders dumped the Lady Falcons 52 to 48.  The Red Raiders dominated the Falcons in a 58 to 38 victory.

After falling behind by 9 to 0 to start the game, the Lady Raiders rallied in the last 11 minutes of the first half to tie the game at intermission by closing out on an 18 to 9 run.  Coffee County struggled to begin the second half and fell behind by 6 with 30 seconds remaining in the 3rd quarter.  But the turning point of the game came thanks to a 5 point eruption to end the quarter.  After a basket, freshman Ashley Starks got a steal, a basket and a free throw in the final seconds to send Coffee County into the final period with the momentum to get the big win. Coffee County was 10 of 17 in the 4th quarter at the free throw line to salt away the win.

Aerial Williams led Coffee County in scoring with 10 points, including hitting 3 of 4 free throws in the 4th quarter to be named the Crazy Daisies player of the game.  Abby Morgan finished with 9 points and Jacey Vaughn added 7 for the Lady Raiders.

The Red Raiders played tenacious defense and neutralized the post play of Lincoln County to capture the win over district leading Lincoln County.  The Raiders went on a 12 to 5 run to close out the 1st quarter as Coffee County led for 29 of the 32 minutes in the game.  Lincoln County made a run in the 2nd quarter to cut the deficit to 5, only to be outscored by Coffee County 11 to 2 in the final 5 minutes of the first half.  In the second half, Coffee County opened up a 21 point lead at one point as Coach Micah Williams was able to empty his bench.

Stephen Sullivan was fantastic on both ends of the floor as he led the Raiders in scoring with 15 points and was named the Crazy Daisies player of the game.  Garrett Eldridge and Tyrese McGee each added 11 points and De’Aaron Rozier chipped in 9.

On Friday, the Raiders welcome Columbia to “The Patch” for the 2nd district game of the week.  The girls’ game will tip off at 6 PM and Thunder Radio will bring you all the action.  Our live coverage begins at 5:50 with the Char-El Apartments and Home Rental Pregame Show.  The Lady Raiders will travel to Chattanooga on Saturday to take on Baylor.  The varsity game is scheduled for 6 PM(EST) in the girls only contest.

Predators Fall to Canadiens in Overtime

The Predators opened the 2017 portion of their schedule with a 2-1 overtime loss to the Canadiens on Tuesday at Bridgestone Arena.

The main storyline of Tuesday’s game was the return of former Predators captain Shea Weber, who made his first appearance at Bridgestone Arena since being traded during the offseason. At the first media timeout, the Predators honored Weber with a tribute video, eliciting a standing ovation from the crowd and appreciation from Weber, who saluted the crowd in response. Weber tied the score early in the third period on an assist from former Predators forward Alex Radulov.

Inconsistent is the best way to describe the Predators as they near the halfway point of the season, regularly following up strong performances with disappointing efforts. Tuesday’s effort wasn’t Nashville’s most impressive, being outshot 38-21 through regulation. The Predators were able to salvage a point behind stellar goaltending from Pekka Rinne but lost for the 16th time in 3-on-3 overtime since the start of last season on goal by Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty.

Beating Canadiens goaltender Carey Price, a one-time NHL MVP, is always difficult, especially on only 13 shots, which is what the Predators had until forward Kevin Fiala’s backhand deflected past Price with 54 seconds left in the second period. Fiala’s goal, his sixth this season, may have actually been his least dangerous scoring chance of the game as he spent most of it buzzing around the net. The 20-year-old has been impressive over the past several games, finally being rewarded Tuesday by ending a 13-game goal drought.

Predators defenseman P.K. Subban didn’t play against his former team, missing his eighth consecutive game with an upper-body injury that’s believed to be a herniated disc. Subban, however, was elected Central Division captain Tuesday for the NHL All-Star Game, being held later this month in Los Angeles.

The Predators begin a three-game road trip with a visit to Florida to face the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday.  Thunder Radio will bring you the broadcast following Coffee County Middle School basketball on Thursday night.

Nashville Sounds Announce 2017 Schedule

The Nashville Sounds Baseball Club announced its 2017 Pacific Coast League schedule today, complete with home and away times for all 142 games.

The 2017 season represents the 40th in club history after beginning play in 1978 in the Southern League. The 40th Anniversary season begins Thursday, April 6th when the Sounds travel to Round Rock, Texas for a five-game series with American Southern Division rival, the Round Rock Express.

“We’re thrilled about the team’s 40th anniversary season and third at First Tennessee Park,” said Sounds General Manager Adam Nuse. “Our staff is working hard to create an exciting promotional schedule that will highlight the rich history of 40 years of Sounds baseball in Nashville.”

Following the season-opening road trip, the Sounds return to First Tennessee Park for the 2017 home opener against the Oklahoma City Dodgers on Tuesday, April 11th. Opening Day is part of a seven-game homestand in which the Sounds will also welcome the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.

Notable dates include home games on Easter (April 16), Mother’s Day (May 14), Memorial Day (May 29) and Father’s Day (June 18). The Sounds are on the road for the fourth of July and Labor Day.

The Sounds annual Independence Day celebration will take place on Monday, July 3 when they host the Oklahoma City Dodgers. Last year’s celebration drew 11,759 fans – the largest crowd in First Tennessee Park history.

Twenty-three (23) day games litter the Sounds schedule, including seven at First Tennessee Park. The first home day game is scheduled for Sunday, April 16 against Colorado Springs.

First Tennessee Park will host 34 weekend games, including 10 Friday, 12 Saturday and 12 Sunday games.

A total of ten homestands make up the 71-game home schedule. The final homestand of 2017 spans 12 games from August 19-31, and is also the longest of the season.

Multiple three-city trips highlight the team’s road schedule. From June 1-11, the Sounds visit the Iowa Cubs, Omaha Storm Chasers and Memphis Redbirds as part of an 11-game road trip. The longest trip of the season comes immediately after the All-Star break. The 12-game trip features stops against the Storm Chasers, Cubs and New Orleans Baby Cakes.
A full 2017 promotional schedule will be released in February. Individual game tickets will be available for purchase in March.
The 2017 season will be the Sounds’ 40th in franchise history and their third as the Oakland Athletics’ top affiliate. Season ticket memberships are available now by calling (615) 690-4487 or by visiting www.nashvillesounds.com.

Fire Burns New Tullahoma Home

A fire that destroyed a house under construction is under investigation on Johnson Lane by the Tullahoma Police Department.
The Tullahoma Fire Department arrived at the fire around 5:50 a.m. Monday morning and found the house that was under construction fully engulfed with flames. According to Fire Chief Richard Shasteen, the firefighters battled the blaze and kept it from spreading to nearby houses.
The chief stated that the house was under construction and since the house was under construction no one was living there at the time. “The fire appeared to have started in the floor of a bedroom,” the chief said. “It then spread up the walls and into the attic.” He said that the flames then spread throughout the house.
There was no power to the house.
Detectives Rana Pawlowski and Tyler Hatfield are investigating the fire.

Gas Prices Climbing

The New Year began with increased gas prices reaching an average of $2.34 per gallon.
The national average has moved higher for 34 of the past 35 days, largely due to market reactions to last fall’s OPEC deal. Compared to a week ago, pump prices have risen 4 cents in Tennessee to an average of $2.13 per gallon.
The low price in Manchester is $2.09 and in Tullahoma the low price is $2.08 per gallon.
