Westwood Girls and College Street Boys Capture Elementary Basketball Titles

2017 CCYBL Champion Westwood Lady Eagles

The Coffee County Youth Basketball League crowned a pair of champions on Saturday as the 16 team league held their championship and consolation games.  In a pair of games recorded by Thunder Radio, the Lady Eagles of Westwood and the Cougars of College Street captured the titles in the girls and boys divisions respectively.  In the consolation games, the Lady Tigers of Hillsboro defeated North Coffee 31 to 23 and the Hillsboro Tigers dropped the Hickerson Hawks 37 to 22.

In the girls consolation game, Marissa Medina led Hillsboro in scoring with 15 points.  Olivia Vinson led the Lady Chargers of North Coffee with 10 points.  In the boys’ consolation, Samuel Medina was the leading scorer for Hillsboro with 13 points while Ethan Hargrove led Hickerson with 16 points.

After trailing for 3 quarters, the Lady Eagles of Westwood exploded for 15 points in the 4th quarter to capture the title over the defending champion Lady Rebels of New Union 25 to 15.  New Union jumped out to a 6 to 2 lead in the first period and led by one entering the 4th period.   Westwood scored the first 15 points in the 4th quarter to seal the win.  Westwood was led in scoring with 10 points while Kailee Rossman added 7 points with all of those coming in the 4th quarter.  New Union was led in scoring by Samantha Kirby and Raelin Tucker who each finished with 4 points.

2017 CCYBL Champion College Street Cougars

In the boys’ championship, College Street used a big 3rd quarter to break open a tie game to defeat Westwood 33 to 18.  With the game tied at 14 at the half, College Street outscored Westwood 16 to 2 in the 3rd quarter to capture their 4th straight elementary title.  College Street was led in scoring by Brady Wright who finished with 9 points.  Jayden Carter added 6 points.  Westwood was led in scoring by Cooper Reed who had 7 points.

Members of the Westwood girls’ and College Street boys’ teams will be guests on Saturday’s Coffee Coaches Show to review their seasons.  The Coffee Coaches Show airs at 10 AM each Saturday and is broadcast live from the showroom of Al White Ford/Lincoln.

Roll-Over Crash leads to Arrest

On Thursday, Coffee County Deputy Joey Ricco responded to a single vehicle roll-over crash on Hwy 53. Upon arrival the deputy located Chelsey Lynn West age 28 of Bailey Perry Rd, Manchester and her 3 month old child inside the car, West was unresponsive, medical personal arrived and transported her and the child to Unity Medical Center. West was later transferred to Vanderbilt Medical Center via Life Flight.
Deputies allegedly found inside the vehicle, a small bag of green leafy substance believed to be marijuana, Xanax, and a hydrocodone pill along with several other non-scheduled prescriptions in a bottle. A blood test was done at Unity Medical with results pending.
Later on Thursday Ricco was told West was out of the hospital and charged her with reckless endangerment, schedule 2, 4 and 6 drug violations and DUI
Her bond was set at $18,000 and her court date is Feb 27, 2017.
The child that was in the accident was released from the hospital.

Morrison Man facing Drug Charges in Coffee County

Coffee County Deputy Kevin Smith stopped a vehicle on the McMinnville Hwy on Thursday for a traffic violation.
Smith says in the arrest warrant that he was given consent to search the vehicle.
The deputy says he observed Paul Martin Phillips age 54 Smart Station Rd, Morrison attempting to hide a white bottle. After the subject gave the bottle to the deputy he opened it and it allegedly contained a small amount of meth and some other pills. Upon search of the vehicle the deputy allegedly found approximately 59.8 grams of crystal meth along with 29 grams of marijuana, 9 Xanax pills, and 1 oxycodone. The subject also allegedly had in his possession, plastic bags that could be used to deliver illegal drugs, and fake containers of chocolate milk and WD40 cans that can be used to conceal illegal drugs.
Deputy Smith says in his report that the man was asked if all the drugs in the vehicle were his and he said yes.
Phillips was charged with 2 counts of manufacturing/delivering/selling/possession of a controlled substance, unlawful drug paraphernalia uses and activities, schedule 2 and 4 drug violations and violation of probation.
Bond was set at $57,500 and he’ll appear in Coffee County General Sessions court Feb 13, 2017.

Tullahoma continues to Investigate early January Fire

The Tullahoma Police Department is continuing to investigate a fire that destroyed a house on Johnson Lane on Jan. 3.
The Tullahoma Fire Department arrived around 5:50 a.m. to the fire and found the house was fully engulfed with flames. Fire Chief Richard Shasteen stated at the time that the firefighters battled the blaze and kept if from spreading to nearby houses.
The chief stated the house was under construction and no one was living in it at the time. The chief said at the time that fire appeared to have started in the floor of a bedroom and spread up the walls into the attic. The flames then spread throughout the house.
There was no power to the house at the time of the fire.
Police say they are waiting on evidence that was collected from the house to be returned from the lab.
Lt Jason Ferrell stated that they are continuing to investigate the fire and anyone with information about the blaze is asked to contact the police department at 455-0530.

Unemployment Rates Rise across the Tennessee

County unemployment estimates for December show the rates increased in all 95 Tennessee counties.
Coffee County’s rate went up in December from 4.7 in November to 4.9 percent.
Warren County also went up to 4.6 percent from 4.4 percent.
Grundy County’s unemployment rate went from 6.9 to 7.3 percent.
Bedford County rose from 4.7 percent to 5.1.
Franklin County jumped from 5% to 5.3.
The unemployment rate in Moore County went up from 3.7 to 4.2 percent and Cannon County increased from 4.3 in November to 4.5 percent in December.
Williamson County had the state’s lowest unemployment rate at 3.5 percent, while Lake County had the highest at 10.2 percent.

Cannon County Man hit with TennCare Fraud Charges

A Cannon County man is charged with TennCare fraud in connection with the sale of prescription drugs which were paid for by the state’s healthcare insurance program.
The Office of Inspector General (OIG), with the assistance of the Cannon County Sheriff’s Office, has announced the arrest of Tony McPeake, 60, of Woodbury. He is accused of using TennCare benefits to obtain the painkiller Oxycodone and later selling a portion during an undercover police investigation. McPeake is charged with TennCare fraud and sale and delivery of a Schedule II controlled substance.
District Attorney General Jennings H. Jones is prosecuting.
TennCare fraud is now a Class D felony punishable by up to four years in prison.
The OIG, which is separate from TennCare, began full operation in February 2005 and has investigated cases leading to more than $3 million being repaid to TennCare, with a total estimated cost avoidance of more than $163.6 million for TennCare, according to latest figures. To date, 2,794 people have been charged with TennCare fraud.

Justin Kenneth Jones was born July 13, 1993, in Tullahoma, Tennessee to John Kenneth Jones (Kimberly) of Bradyville, Tennessee, and Lisa Holbrook (Mike) of Manchester, Tennessee. Justin married Veronica P. Jones and lived in Manchester, Tennessee raising two sons, Logan and Laine. Justin loved to hunt, fish, ride dirt bikes, have cookouts, coach his boys in ball, and spend time with his family and friends. Justin attended the Rutledge Falls Baptist Church. Justin loved everyone. He always had energy, a smile, an uplifting personality, with a drive to make the most out of life. He was employed by Lee Company as a Plumbing mechanic. This company were just like family cousins. Preceded in death by a grandfather; Howard Buckner. Freshman Basketball Teams Split with Warren County

The Coffee County Central High School freshman basketball teams welcomed Warren County to their home court at the Coffee County Raider Academy on Thursday night.  The Raiders and Lady Raiders fought to a spilt with their Hwy 55 rivals in the doubleheader.  The Lady Raiders won 47 to 24 while the Red Raiders fell 65 to 41.

In the girls’ game, Coffee County held Warren County scoreless in the 2nd quarter as they opened up a 27 to 11 halftime lead.  The Lady Raiders hit seven 3 pointers on the night led by Morgan Jones who finished with 3.  Jones led Coffee County in scoring on the night as she finished with 19 points.  Ellie Graham added 12 points while Ashley Starks and Journey Arnold each finished with 8 points.

After the falling behind 8 to 0 at the start of the game, the Red Raiders played Warren County pretty evenly in the rest of the first half as they trailed by 11 at the half.  Four Pioneer 3 pointers in the 3rd quarter helped the visitors storm out to a commanding lead in the 3rd quarter as they coasted home.  The Red Raiders were led in scoring by Austin Burch who had 13 points.  Rod Brinkley added 10 points and Larson Meltzer finished with 7 points.

The freshman teams are back at home on Monday when they welcome the Lincoln County Ninth Grade Academy to town for another doubleheader.  The girls’ game will tip off at 6 PM at the Coffee County Raider Academy.
