Uncle of Former Rutherford County Sheriff Pleads Guilty

The uncle of former Rutherford County Sheriff Robert Arnold pleaded guilty in federal court for his part in the JailCigs case.
John Vanderveer pleaded guilty in a Nashville federal courtroom to one count of witness tampering Monday.
Arnold pleaded guilty on January 18th to wire fraud, honest services fraud and extortion. Joe Russell entered a guilty plea just two days later to the same charges as Arnold.
Each count in which they entered guilty pleas could carry a 20-year prison sentence each and hefty fines. Sentencing will take place at a later time.
The trio was facing a 14-count indictment stemming from an unauthorized plan to sell e-cigarettes to Rutherford County jail inmates through a company co-owned by Russell and Vanderveer, in which Arnold invested.

Please Help Jason Creek and his Family

Jason Creek

Come out and run/walk to help the family of Jason Creek. Any amount donated will be accepted and appreciated! This is an untimed event to raise money to support Jason Creek and his family during their time of need. An Aerobathon has been planned for Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Manchester Recreation Complex, and a 5K Benefit Fun Run has been set up for Saturday, Feb. 25 also beginning at the recreation center.
On Monday, January 2, 2017, Jason was driving to referee a college basketball game when an impaired driver crossed over the median on Interstate 75 north of Atlanta and struck Jason’s vehicle head-on. Jason suffered significant trauma that included many external and internal injuries, including a broken femur, broken ribs and clavicle, facial lacerations, damage to his spleen that had to be partially removed, and significant damage to his lungs. Jason had surgery two days after the accident to place a rod in his broken leg. The days that followed were very critical as his lungs struggled to function properly, and chest tubes had to be inserted to drain fluid/blood and remove pressure from around his lungs. After several days being sedated and on a ventilator in the ICU, Jason’s condition slowly improved and he was taken off the ventilator for a couple of days. However, breathing and swallowing issues arose and he was placed back on the ventilator and back in the ICU. After showing significant improvement again in vital signs, fever and lung issues, Creek was placed in an Intermediate Care Unit, where he will remain until he can be placed in a regular room.
Jason is an assistant principal at Coffee County Middle School, and his wife, Lana, is also an educator. They have two young sons.
This fundraiser has been set up to assist the family with medical expenses and associated costs throughout Jason’s recovery, not to mention the lost income from being unable to referee for an extended period of time. Thank you to everyone who has already reached out and asked for a way to help. Please continue to keep Jason and his family in your thoughts and prayers. All money raised will be given directly to the family.
To learn more about the events to take place at the recreation center, call (931)-728-0273. To purchase a benefit T-shirt, contact Melady Sherrill at (931)-247-5241, or visit the recreation center to fill out available order forms.

The Lady Raiders needed a three pointer at the end of the 4th overtime from Bella Vinson to force a 5th overtime.  Vinson finished with 28 points.  Marley Perry finished with 7 points before fouling with 3 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter.  Kiya Ferrell finished 6 points on 2 crucial 3 pointers.  The first came in the 2nd quarter to tie the game and the 2nd one came gave Coffee County the lead with 1:17 left in the 4th quarter.  The loss ended the season for Coffee County with a record of 16 and 6 and a runner-up finish in the CTC conference.  The Lady Raiders fell in the CTC conference final on Saturday.

In Saturday’s CTC conference final, the Lady Raiders took the heavily favored White County Wariorettes to the wire before falling 42 to 36.  Six turnovers in the 3rd quarter turned a 6 point lead for Coffee County into a 3 point deficit entering the 4th quarter.  The Lady Raiders cut the deficit to 2 points with 19 seconds remaining, but White County got a basket and a turnover to gain the championship.

CHS Basketball Splits with Lincoln County on Friday Night

It was a night of comebacks on homecoming on Friday night as Coffee County traveled to Lincoln County for an important district basketball doubleheader.  Both games saw a slew of fouls and turnovers in two tight games as the teams enter the home stretch of the regular season fighting for tournament seeding.  At the final horns, Coffee County left Fayetteville with a split on the night as the Lady Raiders held off Lincoln County to win 51 to 43 while the Red Raiders had a huge 2nd half comeback before falling 62 to 57.

In the girls’ game Coffee County raced out to an early 10 to 0 lead but the Lady Falcons roared back to cut that lead to 4 by halftime.  In the 2nd half, Lincoln County could get no closer than 2 points as the Lady Raiders never trailed in the win.  Seventy free throw attempts in the game slowed the pace of play to a crawl but the Lady Raiders converted 10 of their 17 free throw attempts in the 4th quarter to hold on for the victory.

Aerial Williams led Coffee County in scoring with 15 points.  Williams dominated the paint in the 4th quarter while adding 5 points in the final frame.  For her heroic performance, Aerial was named the Crazy Daisies player of the game.   Abby Morgan finished with 11 points and Holli Smithson poured in 9 including a huge 4th quarter 3 pointer.  The win improves Coffee County’s record to 15 and 6 on the year and 5 and 4 in district play.

The Red Raiders had to rally from a 17 point deficit in the 3rd quarter to take the lead over the Falcons on a Darius Rozier 3 pointer with 6 minutes remaining.  The lead changed hands 4 times in the 4th quarter before Lincoln County retook the lead with 1:19 remaining and held on for the win.  The Falcons buried nine 3 pointers in the game and hit 7 of their 11 free throws in the 4th quarter to capture the win.

The Red Raiders once again showed their trend of balanced scoring as 4 Coffee County players finished in double figures.  Garrett Eldridge led the way as he netted 12 points and was named the Crazy Daisies player of the game.  Darius Rozier finished with 11 points, including 8 in the 4th quarter.  Grant Sadler and Tyrese McGee each finished with 10 points for Coffee County who saw their record fall to 19 and 5 on the year and 6 and 3 in district play.

Coffee County travels to Columbia on Tuesday night in their final road trip of the regular season.  The girls’ game will get underway at 6 PM in the Raiders final visit to the Hardy Lloyd Gym.  Thunder Radio will be on hand to bring you all the action beginning with the Char-El Apartments and Home Rental Pregame Show at 5:50.
